I jumped right on THE STRAIGHT STORY and its updated image restoration, even though I already own the expensive and coveted Japanese release. Funny that Imprint did more to impress me today on an announcement for a release of a David Lynch film than Arrow.

My copy of Hard Eight looks excellent but then again that's only a sample size of 1. Will be interesting to see how they do on Days of Heaven, I have that on preorder.

SBS is currently playing this regularly on there World Movies channel as well as having it available for streaming via there on demand catchup TV service until 30 September 2021. If anybody hasn't seen or wants to watch whist waiting for this release.

Surely the Imprint release will be good and they won't mess it up like people above have been speculating.

How do we know for sure that this is a different master from the recent Japanese disc? It doesn’t say that it’s a new restoration(just “from the restored 4K master”), and there’s nothing on the internet about Lynch or anyone else supervising a new transfer. I have the Japanese re-release it doesn’t look like an older master to me.

The Peter Tonguette commentary should be interesting. I love his Peter Bogdanovich book, and I just heard his excellent commentary on James Bridges’ September 30, 1955 from Kino Lorber

I'll be waiting on whatever European outlet puts it out, be it 4k or a new Blu.
Maybe Disney opened the vault for it here in the states but if so it's probably gone straight to Criterion which I'd also give a pass on. lmao

Imprint has a history of sloppy compression. I don't have any examples off hand because I've just plain avoided them.

Their compression quality could use work, but I’d argue that many releases from places like Criterion and Capelight are worse. Will this be the end-all release for THE STRAIGHT STORY? Hell no. But even with B- grade compression, will it almost surely beat any other current release worldwide (particularly coming from a newly remastered in 4K source)? Hell yes.

Was excited for this, but hadn't heard of Imprint's compression issues. Only own Dead Again from them and haven't taken a look yet.

DEAD AGAIN looks decent, but it uses an ancient scan. THE STRAIGHT STORY will be from a new remastered-in-4K source so basing a buying decision for it based off of your perception of DEAD AGAIN wouldn’t be fair.

They did a good job with the compression on The Mothman Prophecies, audio issues notwithstanding. I'll grab this just because it's Lynch, and might lead to some decent local releases of some of his other works like Eraserhead or Inland Empire.
