The currently-unnamed third installment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga will see the return of one of the original’s most popular elements: airship travel using Cid’s trusty vessel, the Highwind. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to finally launch later this month, and will pick up the story of Cloud Strife and company where 2020’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake left off. Square Enix has confirmed that these two games are part of a trilogy, and the third and final installment is reportedly already being written as of this writing.

Airships are a common recurrence in the Final Fantasy series, and Final Fantasy 7’s take on the trope remains one of the most fondly remembered in the franchise. Built by Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth party member Cid Highwind, the Highwind is first commandeered by Team AVALANCHE when Tifa and Barret are captured by Shinra. After the subsequent rescue mission, the Highwind serves as a speedy way to travel across the planet. In the original Final Fantasy 7, the Highwind allows players to backtrack through the game’s World Map, and can even be used to challenge the dreaded Ultimate Weapon boss.

Some eagle-eyed fans say that they spotted the Highwind in one of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s trailers, but it might not be until the next installment that players will get to pilot the legendary airship for themselves. FF7 Rebirth creative director Tetsuya Nomura recently spoke with Famitsu (as translated by Twitter user aitaikimochi) to discuss some of the challenges of bringing the world of Final Fantasy 7 to life on modern hardware. One of the topics he discussed was how the size and quality of FF7 Rebirth’s world map could make implementing airship travel in the next installment difficult.

Sure enough, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will see Cloud and his allies journey through the larger world outside of Midgar’s borders, and a recent trailer from this month’s PlayStation State of Play livestream demonstrated how players will explore the planet’s many different regions. Early previews for FF7 Rebirth have commented on how much bigger the game is than its predecessor, and this is evident in the game’s massive file size.

There will be plenty to see and do in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but it looks like players won’t get to fly around the planet in an airship until the next and final chapter in the series. This makes sense, as the Highwind wasn’t introduced as a mode of transport for the party in the original game until after their fateful trip to the Forgotten Capital, which serves as the ending point for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Fans will have to wait and see how the ongoing Final Fantasy 7 Remake series implements airship travel in its finale.

I'll be shocked if part 3 is a PS5 game. I would imagine it will be an early PS6 game. Perhaps it'll be cross-gen.

I’m expecting it to be a final year PS5 release. Unless they turn it around in 3 years without the COVID issue and now already having the open world built out and it makes it into 2027.

Plus the obligatory PS6 upgrade trilogy.

Except is been in production since 6/6/2022, they originally announced 2023 as part 2 release, I imagine 2026 will be Part 3 as original release was 2025

I’ll stick with 2027/2028 so that 2026 can maybe be a great surprise for me

Square also has rumored IX and X remakes penciled in for 2025 and 2026. I wouldn’t think they want to launch two in a year if those are real. Especially with their recent comments on their pipeline management.

Whilst i absolutely adore FFX, there's already been a remaster done more recently last gen and there's other games like 8 and 9 which i could argue people have been angling for 5o be remade first.

The real reason, i want FFX on PS6 gen with even more games. OMG, can you imagine how much more epic the game world can be to actually line up with the AMAZING scope 9f those cinematics we had. Oh, the sliding down the massive rope things to get to the place where Yuna was. Sin being even more imposing and so on. Damn, i want them going all 9ut for FFX and if that means using the previous entries to plant their feet on game design and visuals, i'm fine with that. For er... Selfish reasons i guess

Whilst i love FF games. I can't say i felt utterly enthralled by FF7 Remake and that it left an impact on me say as playing FFX the first time, or heck, even kinda left me remembering it more like say FF15 (Btw, FF7 Remake IS the better game) but perhaps a part of that reason may have been because this story is now being expanded over 3 games and there's a long wait to play. I know movies have this happen to a degree to, but when you are doing a remake say rather than original IP, it makes it harder to keep that momentum.

I probably won't be playing at launch but hopefully the sequels come to PS+ Extra at some point. There's also Crisis Core i need to play.

Maybe it has been too long, but aren't all the characters the same design as Final Fantasy Advent Children? I thought the redesign happened around 20 years ago.

I played the demo. Nice visuals, interesting story/characters.
As far as story along the idea of VII, it looks like it's on par.

As far as pure gameplay, hopefully the main game expands on what was presented in the game, as it was very basic gameplay. Remove the visuals, remove the character designs, and remove the story, and what is left? Very basic combat gameplay.

Walk along path, nice graphics, fight some monsters by rapid slashing, wait to dodge, slash till their energy is gone. Then Proceed to mini-boss. Cutscenes. Repeat. The combat is nice that it's real time, but not very dynamic or engaging IMO.

Nothing wrong with that, but in terms of gameplay, I'm not seeing much innovation or new ideas in 2024 for a series that started in the 1980s I think on NES, so hopefully the main game really opens it up. It looks like it could be fun for FFVII fans, and with the ability to ride creatures.

It could be a great game, but the demo doesn't show that off IMO.

FF7 Remake Part 3 main story has already been completed, and Nomura thinks they will perhaps start voice recording in the near future.

He remarks that Kitase proposed an idea to him about “something” very important to include, even though it wasn’t in the original game, and Nomura is pondering how to deliver. He thinks it will surely make people happy if they can do it well.

Kitase hopes to deliver an amazing product for Part 3 without having to sacrifice quality over time. He says the reason why FF7 Rebirth was such an efficient development period was because they retained the same staff as the previous installment, and Part 3 will also have the same team.

Kitase mentions FF7 Rebirth was actually done within 3 years since about one year was developing the DLC, and he hopes to be able to stick with that schedule for Part 3 too.

FF7 Rebirth Director Naoki Hamaguchi said Rebirth took 4 years to develop in parallel with FF7R Intergrade! #FF7R

He says they are considering using Unreal Engine 5 for the final game, but believes what players want most is for them to deliver the game in good shape as soon as possible. He says he will make a decision based on whether it will be faster to switch engines or whether it is best to make it all at once as it is now.

I'll be happy if they just stick with what they have instead of switching engines if they can actually figure out how to optimize a current gen game. Two Final Fantasy PS5 exclusives and both had crap Performance modes, and there's really no excuse.

O this news just gives me wood, I think late 2026 well get the game voice recording is usually done about 18 months before release! Wonder if this also means the Airship and full open world issues have been resolved.
