Question HDMI cable? Does it make a difference?

Hi

I am going to buy a playstation 3 to use as a bluray player because i have been waiting for AGES on the panasonic BD30 to come out in the UK but it hasnt and i am gettin fed up waiting and the PS3 seems to be very popular and has great PQ etc.

So so you all think that the HDMI cable i use with it will make a difference?

I have seen ones that cost loads and some that only cost £20 so i was wondering will it make a difference? Because i have read the official PS3 HDMI cable is very good and its only £20.

Those ones that are really expensive have lots of shielding and other such protective material. That was really important on older cables that carried analog signals. HDMI only carries digital signals so you don't need to spend scads of money on an HDMI cable. Go for something less expensive, you definitely dont need anything like monster here. http://www.monoprice.com

A lot of people on this site will tell no it doesn't matter and direct you to cheap cable sites like monprice and bluejeans . I have tried monoprice and the cable was cheap I got what I paid for , and then went and bought a new cable from monster when the monoprice cable fell apart in my hand when I disconnected it when I was moving my system to a different room . No problems with my monster cables and I do enjoy the free replacement warranty for life on their cables .From what i have noticed its all personal preference and if you are happy with a cheap cable than buy it and enjoy , if you want the warranty and peace of mind spend a little more and forget about it .

The difference between low and high cost HDMI cables is mostly in the materials and workmanship. One person just told us a cheapie fell apart.

Cheap will get it done, but may not stay in one piece. Is that really a gold conductive surface or simulated with a brass? Does it say it has gold contacts? The Monster stuff is high grade, but possibly also over kill as you do not see a difference in the two cables.

1.3 compliant HDMI cable may have more shielding or slightly thicker wires to carry the HD signal. Sure, it seems fine at first until you start to max out the bandwidth and you can't get the signal through on the thinner cable. I try not to go too cheap with cables.

Engineers design this stuff within certain specs for a reason. They don't price it, marketers do.

I have 5 Monoprice HDMI cables that cost $5/each - I have had them for over a year.

There is nothing wrong with the build quality at all.

Unless you're looking for a cable longer than 25ft, go with the cheapest one.

Same here, and no... I don't own any Westinghouse products and never will! I use a 6ft HDMI cable that I bought from Monoprice. So far, no problems and it looks quite amazing.

For short cable runs, I see zero point in getting ripped off by spending a ton on HDMI cables. I have several $6 monoprice cables and their build quality is very high. Save the $$ and put the money in the bank, or buy a few movies.

When it comes to a DIGITAL cable, zeroes and ones, yes I really want to use a $5 cable, especially when it performs IDENTICALLY to a $500 cable.

Just make sure it's a 1.3 compliant HDMI cable and you should have no Problems out of it. However I would recommend getting a good Surge Surpressor. Inland makes some great ones for about 1/4 of what you would pay for a Monster One with the exact same specs.

It's actually a bit more complicated than that since HDMI interfaces transmit the digital signal at a fixed frequency.
So a $5 (depending on how well its made) may work at 1.0 rate but not so well at the higher 1.3 rate. (assuming 1.3 TX/RX pair)

You can actually lose data due to too high of a BER due to losses.
If the ECC circuits can't keep up you will lose information at this point.
(not the entire pic necessarily but bits within the pic)

If your run is long, invest in a tested cable at the length needed. (Like the belden blue jeans sells for example)
Very short runs are more forgiving.
