Paramount The Truman Show 4K UHD (1998)

The Truman Show 4K Blu-ray

Quote:
‘The Truman Show’ 25th Anniversary; Arrives On 4K Ultra HD July 4, 2023 From Paramount

Paramount Home Entertainment has officially announced and detailed their 4K Ultra HD release of ‘The Truman Show’ starring Jim Carrey. The film will arrive home on 4K Ultra HD for the first time ever on July 4, 2023 in celebration of its 25th Anniversary.

Director Peter Weir’s cinematic triumph THE TRUMAN SHOW celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and Paramount Home Entertainment is marking the occasion by releasing a newly remastered version of the beloved classic on 4K Ultra HD™ for the first time ever on July 4, 2023.

Starring the incomparable Jim Carrey, THE TRUMAN SHOW was a box office and critical success, earning over $264 million worldwide and a 95% fresh critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Nominated* for three Academy Awards®, THE TRUMAN SHOW is both wildly entertaining and a complex exploration of media consumption, surveillance, and reality TV that was ahead of its time and even more relevant today.

Carrey stars as Truman Burbank, a man whose life is a nonstop TV show. Truman doesn’t realize that his quaint hometown is a giant studio set run by a visionary creator (Ed Harris), that folks living and working there are Hollywood actors, and that even his incessantly bubbly wife (Laura Linney) is a contract player. Gradually, Truman gets wise, and his response leaves viewers laughing, crying, and cheering like few films ever have.

THE TRUMAN SHOW has been fully remastered using scans of the original negative, with the new 4K version approved by Weir. The film is presented with Dolby Vision™ high dynamic range (HDR) and Dolby Atmos® audio for a truly immersive experience**. The 4K Ultra HD two-disc set includes the film on both 4K Ultra HD Disc and on Blu-ray™, along with access to a Digital copy of the film and legacy bonus content on Blu-ray detailed below:

How’s It Going to End? The Making of The Truman Show – Two-Part Documentary
Faux Finishing—The Visual Effects of The Truman Show
Deleted Scenes
Photo Gallery
Theatrical Trailers
TV Spots

*1999, Best Director (Peter Weir), Best Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), Best Original Screenplay (Andrew Niccol)

**Dolby Atmos enabled devices are also required to experience Dolby Atmos at home. To experience Dolby Vision on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, a Dolby Vision enabled TV is required with a Dolby Vision enabled 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

Already have the digital UHD version and, if memory serves, it looks great. Will happily grab the disc (assuming Paramount doesn't botch the encode).

I really hope paramount gets it right

DVD - right aspect ratio and geometry, but non anamorphic

Blu-ray - wrong aspect ratio and distorted/stretched geometry

4K - ? Is it on Paramount Plus yet?
Edit : uh oh AR is listed as 1.85:1 like the Blu-ray. The OAR was 1.66:1. I could live with a matted/non distorted 1.85:1 though.

There were two DVDs. The first 1999 DVD used what I assume was the laserdisc transfer:

It was non-anamorphic 4:3 with a 1.66:1 transfer of the film.

The second 2005 Special Edition DVD (reissued a zillion times since then with various covers) used a then-new 16:9 1.78:1 transfer:

FINALLY. Peter Weir deserves more respect. Bring Witness, Master and Commander, and Dead Poets Society to 4K next please.

His masterpiece 'Picnic At Hanging Rock' was released on 4K in the UK in May (standard and fancy special edition) and another 4K edition from France coming on July 19th.

While it’s great to see The Truman Show and Picnic at Hanging Rock getting UHD Blu-Rays, one of his underrated early films, that struggled at the box office (that won Linda Hunt the Best Supporting Actress Oscar), hasn’t even got a genuine Blu-Ray yet. I’m talking about The Year of Living Dangerously. Great film, from 1982, with Mel Gibson (playing an Aussie, when he still was Australian), and Sigourney Weaver. Both of them give fantastic performances. Weir made it just before Witness, which was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, including Picture, Director, Actor (Harrison Ford), Score (Maurice Jarre), and winning for Best Editing and Screenplay. Since Witness made him a bankable Hollywood director, it seems like TYOLD was forgotten as one of Weir’s standout films.

Hence, would like to see The Year of Living Dangerously get a Blu-Ray (finally) and both Witness and Dead Poets Society get UHD Blu-Rays.

Back on topic: My copy of Truman Show shipped yesterday (heading down under). Will be great to view it sometime next week. The 1080pBD is a poor transfer (especially the stretched picture).

At last! Hopefully the encode is being done by the “Star Trek” team and not the guys who did Fatal Attraction and Planes Trains.

Let's hope that 1.85 listed on the link in the OP is just a placeholder.

Figuring out the "right" aspect ratio is confusing.

The film was exhibited in the US at 1.85. The theatrical prints were not hard matted to 1.66 like The Good German, for example.

That said, the framing looks great at 1.66 and even 1.33. Weir pretty clearly composed with VHS in mind and, honestly, the frequent matte boxes he used to suggest "hidden cameras" show up much better at 1.66 or 1.33.

What I really hope is that they contacted him and asked what his preferred aspect ratio is.

I suspect we'll just get standard 1.78 or 1.85, however.

They're totally visible in 1.33, mostly visible in 1.66, as on the DVD, but almost invisible at 1.78.

I hope Weir is involved in any 4K physical release, so he can instruct them how he wants the film seen.

I don't mind 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 as long as its not distorted like the BD. Pillarboxed 1.66:1 would be best though. Weir's most famous movies seem to be composed for 1.66:1

There are already screencaps from the new 4K master in the BD thread, since it has been streaming for about a year. The proportions look normal.

I agree, the framing holds up (and arguably is even enhanced for the reasons you mentioned) at 1.66/1.33. Likely won't happen with Paramount, but it would be nice to see this new release packaged with multiple ARs, like what WB did with their Warner Archive release of Curse of Frankenstein.

I was considering buying the original Blu-ray release until Paramount quietly released a 4K remaster on iTunes and Vudu in late 2021, so I'm definitely going to be picking this up on day one.
