Default Illumination's Super Mario Bros. 2 (2026)

Jack Black Pitches Pedro Pascal to Voice Wario in ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Sequel, Says ‘It’s Not a Given Bowser Returns’

Quote:
With “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” grossing $204.6 million domestically and $377 million globally in its debut over the five-day Easter weekend, it’s all but certain Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment will move forward with a “Super Mario” sequel. Jack Black, who voices the villainous Bowser in the blockbuster, is already thinking ahead, telling GameSpot that Pedro Pascal is his pick to voice Wario should the sequel bring in a new villain.

“It’s not a given that Bowser will return,” Black said. “You know, I did a few ‘Kung Fu Panda’ movies, and it was a different villain every movie. They may do the same thing.”

“You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain?” Black continued. “Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario! Pedro Pascal is Wario.”

Regardless of whether Wario will enter the movie franchise in the inevitable “Super Mario Bros. Movie 2,” another iconic Nintendo character appears to be well on his way to gracing the big screen. In the current film’s brief post-credits scene,
[Show spoiler]a green-and-white-speckled Yoshi egg sits alone and cracks before the screen quickly cuts to black. It appears Yoshi
could be a major player in a potential sequel.

In the Variety cover story on the making of “The Super Mario Bros. Move,” Illumination boss Chris Meledandri was vague when answering a question about potential sequels or future adaptations of Nintendo properties. “Our focus right now is entirely on bringing the film out to the audience, and at this time, we’re not prepared to talk about what’s coming in the future,” he said. “I definitely wouldn’t rule anything out.”

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is now playing in theaters nationwide.

Bring it on. They need to crack Nintendo wide open and produce the numerous other titles.

For me it was great MARIO entertainment in that it delivered what I as a fan would want out of a film about Mario. You'd think that's not such a hard feat, but just look at what we've gotten in the past decade. Hollywood treats the prospect of just sticking to the source material like it's a Rubix Cube.

Cant argue here. They could have easily screwed this up with eh hem "changes" and omissions for reasons. Love that they didn’t. I just wish the film had a more intriguing story I guess but it’s a Mario Bros. Movie so I can’t expect Shakespeare here, right?

I’ll be there for part 2.

They did a lot right with the Super Mario Bros. movie, and it's generally entertaining. A really good adaptation of the video games over the decades.

I wish they kept Link animated too. I'm concerned how a live-action Legend of Zelda is going to turn out. When have the games ever been live-action? It's always been animated, sprites or CGI based, so seeing Link in live action, I don't know if it's going to be decent. A big departure from the source material already IMO. They can really mess it up badly. Hopefully not.

Thankfully, Super Mario Bros 2 will be CGI animated. Looking forward to a sequel.

Why should there be a sequel?

Nobody asks for movies to be made. The studios make what they think will generate profits and they have adopted the mindset that if a movie does well then sequels are less of a risk financially than creating a new movie around a different IP.

Granted, some franchises get run into the ground this way and people get fatigued by it. That's where reboots come in. Now that's a rabbit hole for you.

I'm hoping for a Nintendo Multi-verse of Super Smash Bros.! Just joking. Hopefully they keep each of the franchises separate, but it is long overdue for Nintendo to bring their Link/Legend of Zelda, Metroid and another Super Mario Bros. films to life in theatrical movie form.

Jack Black was good as Bowser IMO. Pratt, while his voice worked and he had personality, turned out to be good even if he wasn't an exact-ah match-ah.
Anna Joy was good as Princess.

I felt Pokemon should've been in the CGI full world style instead of trying to bring in Ryan Reynolds as live-action. I still haven't seen that one so I can't say for sure.

It actually a really good movie and the world is fully realized. It was easy to think that CGI would have been better and live action was quite a gamble but it worked for me. I'm hoping for a sequel to that one as well, or at least another movie set in the same world.

I guess its because they're seen as a bit immature to fit the themes of Zelda where it's decidedly more serious and darker fantasy than Mario. I honestly don't know if they pull it off without inserting their typical "Illumination" humour.

Chris Pratt spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the sequel:

"We're in the midst of this writers' strike, and so everything has been paused and [put] on hold for the right reasons. I really do support the WGA and our writers. When the negotiations have been completed, and the writers feel comfortable moving forward, then it'll be time to start talking about what's next for that.

"We're so grateful for the support, though. It’s really shocking to me how successful that movie's been. I mean, I expected that people would love it the way I was excited about it, but it's truly multigenerational around the world. People love it. They love Mario... It's a really fun, funny, cute, heartwarming movie and, God, I can't believe I'm part of it”.

If they want to go meta, remake a Japanese cartoon using Mario characters.
