Default Subwoofer

I just had another quick question to ask. What is a good subwoofer? I was looking at velodyne but wasn't too sure.

I was just wondering what the all around best sub would be. I was looking to spend ~$600, so any inpuit would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I bought a Velodyne VA-1012X (10" powered subwoofer with 12" passive radiator in the late '90's and have been amazed at its sound quality and durability. It has performed beyond my expectations and easily outlived its 5 year warranty. I paid a little over $500 for it.

I'm big on buying a sub that matches AT LEAST the brand of my speakers. Lots of times a company makes subs to match a particular series even.

If I were you I'd look into a sub that's made by the company that makes your speakers. If it happens to be Polk Audio then the PSW303, 404, and 505 are all fantastic!

As of matter of fact I do have Polk's I have the whole LSi line, but I wasn't a big fan of the matching sub . I might go and try to listen to a few more Polk subs though, and will listen to a few velodyne's.

I have a fairly big room (about 500sq/f) does that matter in the size of the sub I need?

I would guess that a 12" sub should be okay. Placement is also important as well.

The sub is the one speaker that you absolutely DO NOT need to match to the rest of your system.

If you have $600, there should be two choices.

1) SVS - 20-39 PCi - $599 - http://svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-pcpow2.cfm
2) Hsu Research - VTF2Mk3 - $499 - http://hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-2-mk3.html

Find me one site that specializes in audio that consistently recommends low budget subs from Polk, Paradigm, Klipsch, Velodyne, etc., over SVS and Hsu Research and I'll BUY YOU your new subwoofer.

Sometimes you gotta cut through the hype of people that only want you to buy what they have and get one with getting superior bass.

You should only be considering Paradigm and Velodyne if you're looking into Paradigm's Reference line or Velodyne's Digital Drive line, and in both cases you would be budgeting at least $1,500.

SVS is the only sub to consider? Suprised all the other manufactures haven't gone out of business... Perhaps people who recommend something other than SVS do so because they perfer something other than SVS. I listened to an SVS sub, and in the end I purchased a Paradigm because I liked it better.

Hmm k let me see, $600 wasn't a max by any means but more of a guideline... . I did take the time to look through the site and found the VTF-3 MK3 with Turbocharger...

Any thought's one this one? and how it compares to a Velodyne or other competitors?

Are both of these good choices for a system that is used 75% for music? I ordered a new sub, but I have 30 days in-home to audition it, and for the price, I like these.

Velodyne makes a really good sub for the money. SVS is another good company, you can check them out here, www.svsound.com. You could always try going to a local AV store or a Best Buy with a Magnolia Theater as well and listen to them before you buy. Paradigm and Definitive Technologies are great as well. to read some reviews go to www.soundandvisionmag.com, they have a review section you can read.

Don't buy into the "matching sub" sales pitch. Some companies like Velodyne and HSU specialize in subs and do it much better than many speaker companies. Velodyne's digital servo series subs help sub placement by measuring room accoustics and correcting sub output. If you can afford it, I would say seriously check out Velodyne.

If M&K were still around, I would recommend them without hesitation. M&K developed the first subs, and they are simply amazing.

SVS will crush all. I highly endorse an SVS sub. I have the baby of the bunch. The 10" 300w sub, and this thing is a beast. It made my polk audio sub sound like a 6 1/2" woofer. If you get a 12", glue down all you glass, and its worth a look. The cabinets are beautiful, and they get a little pricey, but for $600, you may be able to come out good.

A speaker company that has been forgotten that produces excellent subwoofers is Cerwin Vega. Simple and straight forward and been in the speaker business a long time. I own the the cls-12s and does what a subwoofer is supposed to do.shake your house and lots of bottom end.
There's a 15" model available too.

http://www.cerwinvega.com/cls.php

I would also go with SVS and HSU. Just my recommendation.

A subwoofer is something that you really have to hear for yourself. I personally love Polk speakers, but I do not care for their subwoofers. For $600, I would check out Velodyne, maybe a supercube (although you can only get a small one for that price) but my main recommendation would be an SVS 20-39 PCi. You may not like the look of a cylinder (I do!) but check out SVS for other subwoofers as well. The NSD line is less than $600 and still plays clear and very DEEP. They have a 45 day no questions return policy as well. SVS is my fav, but its all dependent on your own ears, now get out there and demo

SVS and HSU make nice subs but for the price the AV123 MFW-15 seems the way to go.

Velodyne subwoofers are excellent. I can also suggest HSU Research subwoofers. I own two 15" HSU subwoofers. I bought them directly from Mr. Hsu in their Southern California retail outlet. He spent a couple of hours with me and helped with the setup of the subwoofers. I wouldn't trade my subs with anything else. They are outstanding.
