Default I am looking for a new subwoofer

I have a set of Sony speakers that came with 8' subwoofer that does not hit all that deep. I am looking for a new sub that will play a lot deeper. It has to be good for a music (since I smaller speakers that can't reproduce any bass) even though I listen to a whole lot more movies though it.

I as looking at a Velodyne 12 DSP I heared a 12 or a 15 playing the Matrix and I thought it had DTS ( it was just the DVD) sound on the disk. It was by far the best bass reproduction that I had heared out side of the movie theaters.

Can you give me hints as to what I should look for when buying a bass.

What is your price range and room size? That would be nice info to know before giving a recommendation, but if you want a quality sub that won't break the bank, then Driver's suggestion should suffice.

+1, it's all I ever hear being recommended for a nice system, labeled as "the best bang for buck" sub. I'm upgrading to one

You're not going to find any better for $350 than the eD a2-300, that's for sure - if you can stretch $600, $700 - there are many other alternatives...

Ya know, I'm honestly looking at the Cadence subwoofer for next year. It's not that the eD is bad in any way... it's just Humongosaurus Rex. I'm not huge on the aesthetics of it.

There are a ton of subs out there in that price range. Check out Big Daddy's sub sticky thread.

What would you consider the square footage or room dimensions for:
  • "large room"
  • "medium area"
?

I am thinking about getting the A3-250 its only 25 dollars more than the A2-300 and is a 350 watt driver, is their a particular reason alot of you guys are opting for the A2-300 than the A3-250 ?

Well, it's a 10" driver vs. a 12" and it has a 24" long footprint. You could maybe use it as a coffee table....

SVS SUB!!!
Proud owner of the 20-39PC+... still happy to this day! Excellent investment, and these guys stand behind their product (3yr warranty!). Extremely well build products. This is the kind of bass you feel in your belly, and it's not cheap and "boomy". Cant speak for the others, since I have not been exposed to them, but this one gets 6 out of 5 stars from me!

The 12in. is capable of producing better low freq.

Oh Canada...

I have the Velodyne DD 12 (is that the same as Velodyne 12 DSP???) and to be honest the bass was good but not deep. Last weekend my friend and I took some measurements with bass measurement software and made some adjustments to the configuration of my sub. The result is amazing. I have thundering deep bass now. A good test is to play some of the scenes from "War of the Worlds" with only the sub turned on to test the performance of the subwoofer. My subwoofer is at the point now where it shakes my entire house without distortion (but it's on the edge). We were able to get deeper base than my friend’s 15" James subwoofer (and his distorts when hit with hard LFE). I recommend the Velodyne or check out JL Audio.

Ok but the question is, does the benefit of a better LFE outweigh the benefit of a 350 watt driver.

Below is a brief description of the sections that were adjusted in my sub that made a huge difference. I would recommend that before purchasing a sub to make sure there are similar adjustments available so that owners can tweak their subs as desired. My feeling is Velodyne is too conservative with their default settings.

--------------------------------------------------------

The subsonic filter can be set to roll off below a certain frequency to prevent a subwoofer from trying to reproduce extremely low frequencies that could cause it to distort.

The contour setting is like an additional band of EQ that can be used to boost or attenuate a certain frequency. This could be used to add "excitement" to a movie soundtrack at 40Hz, for example.

The settings for low-pass crossover frequency (adjustable from 15 to 199Hz), polarity, and phase are similar to those found on most subwoofers. However, the SMS-1 has one additional, critical setting that lets the user adjust the slope of the low-pass crossover. This can be set from 6 to 48dB/octave in 6dB steps that allow the user to better match the rolloff of the subwoofer to that of the main speakers.

--------------------------------------------------------

Are there any experts about this stuff on Blu-ray.com???
