Set during the height of the Vietnam War and deep in the swamps of Louisiana, a group of National Guardsmen have been ordered to partake in a simulated jungle exploration in an isolated part of Cajun country. Went in to this with minimal expectations the first time I watched, and left as a lifelong fan when it ended. A taut thriller and one of Walter Hill’s best. Excellent pickup by VS!

Speaking of which, thank God for boutiques. VS, casually dropping Southern Comfort on 4k at random, while catalog mega-slumlord Warner Bros couldn’t be arsed to drop Deliverance on uhd in 2022, not even for the film’s FIFTIETH anniversary....that's absolutely frikkin' pathetic, WB.

I was a bit underwhelmed when I saw Deliverance, but that was years ago and I've been meaning to give it a re-watch.

Re: Boorman, I really wanted to like Zardoz cause it's balmy but I found it so ugly to look at. Exorcist II and Excalibur are gorgeous, though.

You have to go into it with properly managed expectations, with the understanding that it is first and foremost a woodsy rite-of-passage softcore porno. In some southern circles, it is rumored to be viewed as the everyman's Barbarella, with some whitewater rafting footage thrown in.
