Thumbs up 6x Blu-Ray Recording coming in Spring.... 8-12x recording coming later in 2008-2009

SHARP to begin Mass Production in April of New 250mW Laser Diodes for Blu-Ray Offering 6x Recording speeds

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News...x?NewsId=22498

8-12X recording speeds also on the way for 2008-2009

Quote:
The japanese company is also working on new laser diode prototypes that are expected to further speed-up the dual-layer recording speed of next generation media. The next product aims at a maximum output of 350mW that will support 8-12X recording in two layers. Note that 8x recording on two-layers requires a power of 230-280mW. The 12x burning speed is the physical limit of recording in the next-generation media. These new developments are expected to be available during 2008 and 2009.

6x is already available in the LG GGW-H20L.

It's in good stock at Fry's for $399.

That drive ONLY does 6x for single layer BD-R.

The new drives based on this new technology are going to be able to do 6x for DUAL Layer BD-R

P.S. As for appropriate media being available... it's very common for lower rated speed media to be capable of being written at higher speeds. They test the media with whatever is highest at the time but that does not mean that it's not capable of more when higher writting speeds become a reality down the line.

Nice! I didn't catch that.

Looks like some cool technology coming down the pipeline. I only wish it would get here sooner!

P.S. The 8-12x speeds coming down the pipeline for later in 2008-2009 are also of the Dual layer variety
