Default Deadpool & Wolverine - The Box Office Thread

There’s a lot of interest in the box-office of this particular film, especially after the apparent “superhero fatigue”, and this is expected to provide a rejuvenation for the genre and MCU. Some expect it to be the top grossing film of the year and one of the biggest CBMs of all-time.

Figured there should be a thread for those that wish to discuss it in-depth, and as a courtesy to others that don’t want to sift through constant BO updates/discussion in the movie thread. And generally because it’s expected to be an especially noteworthy film at the BO.

Opening day will probably be about 5 times Kraven's total gross

Kraven is still happening? Let's see if they don't postpone it again

I reckon it'll have much the same trajectory as Inside Out 2.

I'll be honest, since this is specifically a BO thread. And this is no slight to anybody. I never understood why civilians cared about how much a movie makes at the BO. It's one thing if you're a producer, and you're money is on the line. But for me, it's not my money. I have no dog in the race. Whether the movie makes $1 or $1B, I end up with the same result. $0. I feel this way about any sales chart I don't stand to profit from. Music, books, video games, etc. But I see people getting so worked up over it, like they're the ones making millions from it. They're more excited than actual investors reaping the benefits.

That's a very short-sighted point of view.

I benefit when theaters don't have to shut down because they aren't making any money. A lot of theaters closed down during the last few years, both due to the pandemic and also the lack of product that resulted from the double strikes last year.

Sure, I don't get a cent from it, directly, but it doesn't mean I don't benefit indirectly when movies do a huge business. That's what's keeping a lot of theaters open, it's definitely not movies that are going to make under $10 million over their entire run.

The movie industry won't get back to pre-2020 levels until 2026, at the earliest, according to the latest estimates.

It will be nice to get a sense of "back to normal," but that isn't going to happen for another couple of years, in a best-case scenario.

I would feel that way if I was a theater owner. But where I live, there's like 20 theaters within a stone's throw away. And oddly enough, none of them closed down. If I was in a more remote area, I might feel that way. But where I am, the theaters aren't going anywhere.

Just because it hasn't happened is no guarantee it could never happen.

You're for the most part correct with the exception that if a movie fails then you don't get a sequel to it. I want movies I enjoy to succeed so I get more of it.

Except this is a sequel. And it's a marvel movie. So you know regardless, you're getting 100 more movies.

Wait, so now you're only talking about people discussing the box office for this movie? Because it sure seemed like a general observation about discussing the box office.

For the audience attendance in theaters, this will do well, but it's not going to draw in families to go see it understandably, so it's not going to be as big as Avatar, which has a wider audience range.
