Default Blu-ray for parents..

Hello, I'm fairly new to Blu-ray and so far I'm taken and will never go back, thing is I want my parents to experience the same thing. So I want to buy them a Blu-ray player. Now I'm still a kid and my job gets me a good amount each month. What is a good standard, and cheap blu-ray player I can buy them?

I really don't want to get them a PS3, because well... they'd look at it the wrong way. So any suggestions?

See thing is, they don't even know how to work email... let alone the newest game console. I'm looking to spend about $400-500...

there are lots of threads on this subject, they all boil down to the PS3 being the best, espeically since its 1.1 and will be 2.0.

Panny BD30 is good also, but its only 1.1, and is more expensive than the PS3.

If his parents are put off by the PS3 being a console and media center, then they prolly aren't big on bonus features. Thus, the BD30 is a good choice because it won't matter that it's Profile 1.1. Just my $0.02.

I'd go with the BD30, or hang out for a few weeks and get the BD50. But both are pricier than the PS3 40gb. You can set it up to auto-play movies, so it'll work just like a regular DVD player. Be sure to get them the remote and you're golden.

Either way, keep their firmware up-to-date.

Use the link at the top of the page for players and you can look thru them and get an idea of what is out there. If you see something you like you can then look into them further and get prices at amazon and Vanns or BB but you get the idea.

turn on autoplay and buy the remote. then it will work and feel just like any dvd/blu-ray player, and it will load much faster than most stand-alones. having to wait for loading must be really lame.

The PS3 will never be a game console if you never by any games for it.

Other considerations:

Are they interested in high definition audio?

Are they interested in special features on disks (that you would need profile 1.1 for)?

If the answer is no, you can probably find a very inexpensive Sony BDP-S1. Just update the firmware, before you give it to them. It's a great player, and I would never replace it, if it bitstreamed all lossless audio.

Even with auto-play turned on? My guess is that they'd never see the options in that case, particularly if he was a good son and did all the initial setup for them.

BD30 - chances are your parents don't care about having access to online content so profile 2.0 is not an issue....
