Definitely picking this up. Just the other day, I asked in the UK thread for the Seventh Curse which distributor had the US/Region A rights to the movie, and I said it was up Vinegar Syndrome's alley. Now, they are releasing it. I will order it during the weekend.

I watched WITCH FROM NEPAL on Prime this week (in adequate quality with Cantonese audio and English subtitles) and I did not find it to be very good, but THE SEVENTH CURSE and the extras alone make this worth purchasing. One could always resell the WITCH FROM NEPAL disc too if they want.

Although I’m interested to see how the new Seventh Curse color grading differs from the extras-packed 88 Films Blu, I’ll be picking this up solely for Witch from Nepal, which has never had a decent release. I’ll be happy to retire my ancient non-anamorphic HK DVD.

the cover art is awful but luckly the seventh curse is a great little film and as for witch from Nepal hope 88films releases it with better cover art.

Now that the 88 announcement thread was posted minutes after my initial post in this thread, I’ll definitely be getting the 88 version instead — more extras and vastly superior cover art.

Yeah, me too. Not much reason to get this double feature if you're region free.

I'll stick with my seventh curse 88 release, but I highly recommend anyone interested in insane 80s horror movies check it out. Some of the most batshit visuals, gore, and monsters I've seen. Shout out to the guy torn in half with the tree trap.

I’ll vouch for this too. Absolutely love The Seventh Curse and quite happy with 88’s release.

My short review of the film - this is as gonzo a film as you'd expect from the guy that made Riki-Oh: Story of Ricky. Imagine Armour of God meets The Evil Dead, that's this movie. It's got martial arts butt-kicking (Dick Wei!), exotic Thai locations, some insane prosthetics and gory kills, Maggie Cheung in pre Wong Kar-Wai dumb chick mode (not that anyone in this movie seems to have their head screwed on right), a pipe-smoking Chow Yun-Fat and a cast of hundreds of suicidal extras. |

As I posted in the 88 release thread for this film and the main Vinegar Syndrome thread, I've been looking at screencaps from the 88 Films release of THE SEVENTH CURSE and comparing them with the ones VinSyn has on their site and in their trailer, and this might be the first HK film released by both of those two labels where the color grading looks virtually identical. Not seeing any drastic differences so far.
The question now is whether they will be able to fix the issues present on 88's Cantonese audio track, which are sadly scan-based. I'd even be fine with an altered FX track if it makes the dialogue easier on the ears. |
