Default Could the PS3 play HD-DVD's ?? (no)

Now that the HD-DVD format is dead, to try scoop up some sales could the PS3 or BD players plays HD-DVDs with a software upgrade or emu?

they can have a "Upgrade your player, not your movies" Campaign.

Ignoring that the disc structure is physically incompatible with each other.

That wouldn't help HD-DVD die faster which is what most retailers want.

Why don't we all just leave HD dvd dead and not bother with that inferior "technology"? Just let it go..Who cares about it? I don't

The drives are incompatible and Sony would never allow a emulator that could play hd-dud downloaded images for the PS3.

No, Sony's Blu Ray was in direct competition with HD DVD. It would seem kind of pointless.

The PS3 is good, but it isn't THAT good. It can't resurrect the dead.

lets play wake the dead... just let HD-DVD rest in peace. If you really want to sell more PS3's, then get rid of all the HD-DVD discs...

Do not, I repeat do NOT put coasters into your PS3. The condensation and spilled Dr. Pepper will make it sticky inside.

HD DVD is dead and buried. It's never coming back.

So (assuming for a second that this is possible, which from what I've heard it is not) what harm would come of it?

At this point, if Sony could somehow make the PS3 play HD-DVDs, I think that would be absolutely hilarious. That would remove the absolute last talking point the HD DVD holdouts have ("at least I can enjoy some good movies at firesale prices!").

While we're at it, why not try to get a VHS-VCR player to play Betamax cassette.

Well here's the deal.... A LOT OF people bought HD-DVD cuz it was cheap. They are all PISSED now and know they have to step up to BD or stick w/ old movies on HD-DVDand upscaled DVDS for now.

SO now they can have a player, that will play the DVDs, BDs, Download content and if you want to watch your HD-DVD you can and toss out that $95 HD-A3 some ******* got you for xmas.

I KNOW many movies will get re-made onto BD's......JUST A THOUGHT

IS HD-DVD really that much different technology then DVD?

if this is a serious question, then the short version is yes.

do you really need to have it explained to you that a disc structure that packs 2-4x as much data onto a disc is very different from DVD? not just in the disc structure, but also in the hardware that's needed to read said discs?

in the meantime, because of similar differences between HD DVD and BD, it's similarly impossible to introduce compatibility into existing players... and even if it weren't... why would the BDA want to, for a technology that's even less than niche at this point?
