Will PS3 play CD's and Upconverted DVD's? - Blu-ray Forum

I plan on the PS3 being my first blu-ray player. Actually I preordered one at FYE today. My question, where I'm adding this the TV just has one HDMI port. Currently that's used for a Samsung upconverting DVD player. I use that to play DVD's as well as CD's since I have no other CD player on that stereo. I know when I get the PS3 I can get a switchbox but I'm hoping to use it as a blu-ray player but as well a cd player and dvd player. Will it play both CD's and DVD's? As well if it does play DVD's will it upconvert DVD's like the other blu-ray players? I would hate to give up that feature of my dvd player.

PS3 will be backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs to work with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. It should also support playback of DVD movies as well as music CDs, SACDs and DualDiscs. The only thing that's still unclear is if it will offer upconversion of DVDs, but with the powerful Cell chip and RSX graphics processor there's no reason they can't support it. Perhaps we will know more about this after E3 in May.

I was just about to ask this question myself

anybody find out any information on ps3 or the 360 hddvd players playing upconverting regular dvds?

I want to know because im trying to decide wether its worth it to buy an upconverting dvd player rite now
-100 bucks CND for Phillips dvp5960 with upconverter,usb input, region free hack ...kinda tempting

The 360 can already play DVD's and I thought it did upscale them depending on the settings for the console, ie if you are playing games at 720p then a DVD will also be output at that resolution? Anyone who has one please confirm.

I certainly thought that the PS3 will also upscale depending on how you set it up but have yet to see anything concrete from Sony about this.

I'm very keen to see what the movie playback is like on PS3, for blu-ray and DVD. Frankly it needs to be superb if the blu-ray format is to succeed. Hopefully Sony will demo it soon.

Certain original Xbox games on this list will be upscaled: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/back...ygameslist.htm

Even at that, it's not 100 percent guranteed.

DVD's are not upscaled. 480p only.

Actually I'm pretty sure DVDs are upscalled on the 360 only if you use the VGA cable. I can't say for sure as I only have component though.

I have a Vga cable ill have to try that when i get home
but i havent heard that from anyone I doubt its true
360 doesnt upconvert

a hacked regular xbox does however!

This has been confirmed, that with the latest firmware update and a VGA cable the X360 does indeed upconvert DVDs.

If anyone wants to know what upsampling a DVD looks like, you can do it with your PC.

Just get Power DVD or WinDVD. Use harware exeleration to get the best results. But even when you got it software decoding, if you do full screen at 1200 x1024 or even 1600x1200, it's upsampling it, as the screen does not change resolutions.

Not that impressive. A decent progressive scan DVD player will not be far off.

Search HD video clips, download 720p clips ( you need a 3Ghz (2.2 Ghz AMD) or greater with 1GB o of Ram to play 1080p vids). Some of the vids are not encoded that great, but you will notice the difference of True HD compared to DVD.
