Default Red ants re-energized with Super Upscaling idea

Just take a look at the usual forums - more notably AVS - and you'll find the usual suspects at it once again (Drunken Tivo Dealer and Lee Stewart coming immediately to mind). They are now hyping this new so-called Super Upscaling that Toshiba mentioned in the WSJ article and how it might take off.

Some on there are now saying many Blu-rays don't even look better than SD DVD anyway.

These guys never go too low I guess.

Exclamation Exactly!

I was reading an article over at hollywoodinhidef.com that linked to a CNET article about why Toshiba will release a Blu-ray player this year.

Guess what? The very first reply to the article was by none other than DeadMeatGA (whom I'm sure many of you recognize) and he was praising the wonders of SUC (super upconversion).

CNET article here

It's funny how these deluded people can jump on anything with such zeal just because they (supposedly) hate Blu-ray!

Who are they, really?
  • Viral marketers from a certain software company?
  • Angry cheapskate XBox 360 owners who believed all the lies and got burned?
  • Rabid Sony-haters?
  • All the above?

I really don't understand it --- really. It is completely irrational.

The TiVo guy describes HIMSELF as the biggest independent Toshiba dealer in the USA. He's just selling his wares. And he's doing so under a AVS approved "insider" and "expert" guise.

Say, Bill Gates, which is better: Windows Vista or Mac OSX? Wow, well you're an expert so I guess it MUST be Vista.

Their HDM format failed, so now they push something with even LESS PQ and no chance of upscaling audio.

So they go from half of the full HD experience with HD DVD (most titles missing lossless codec) to basically a quarter of the full HD experience (upconverted video and still no lossless audio).

Wow - these guys are truly visionaries of the future!

Been reading the threads... The best bit from Lee was this:

Truly priceless coming from the guy who made 25 posts a day, day in and day out, obsessing over the benefits of HD DVD.

DeadmeatGA is a definite rabid Sony-hater (he also has a posting history where he shows he hates jews and blacks too, BTW). I sure hope he isn't paid by anyone to spew his garbage.

I am not too familiar with the Toshiba super upconverting or whatever it is called - but aren't they just talking about upconverting regular DVDs better than they are upconverted today? This isn't a new media type is it?

I have a lot of DVDs that will probably not make it to BD, and if they can look better, why is that a bad thing?

It's always good if products can be improved. But simple common sense says this product will not make it to market. If this super upconversion is as amazing as "they" make it out to be, then why did Toshiba waste so much money on HD DVD? Why is every other manufacturer in line with Blu-ray products and not super upconversion?

My guess - and really, given the events of the past year, I do believe my judgments are better than the zealots now pushing this super upconversion - is that super upconversion, while may be useful for satellite images or security camera images, is not acceptable for movies.

It's not a bad thing - but the way they are marketing it IS a bad thing. They are trying to tell people that it will equal HDM. It simply can't for a couple of reasons:

1 - you can't make 480p look like 1080p
2 - you can't upconvert audio

They are putting lipstick on a pig and hoping no-one will notice it's not a beauty queen.

Hence, the reason why we shouldn't pay him any attention. He probably thinks "the South shall rise again!" too. *******s like that feed off attention, so why raise a fuss over such blatant ignorance? Let him starve.
