NCAA 09 New Features Announced
Bigger Holes, Louder Crowds, Online Dynasties and…Mascot Mode?
By Bill Barnwell

EA's detailed what fans should expect to see with regards to new features in the upcoming NCAA Football 09, the twelfth iteration of EA's college football simulation.

The primary focus of the game appears to be on refining the mechanics of the running game, obviously a more significant part of the college game than in the pros when you consider the prevalence of the option. The game's new Break Away Animation Engine is designed to create more opportunities for guys in the clear to stay there, while the offensive line play has been designed to create bigger holes and larger cutback lanes.

As with college games across all sports, there's going to be a continued focus on making the experience of being in the stadium more authentic, a difficult thing to do without giving the user a beer bong and a university sweatshirt. Either way, the game features a new dynamic crowd system, user-customizable stadium music and sounds, reactions to breakaways, as well as more confusion and difficulty in making changes when the user is playing in a particularly boisterous stadium.

The visuals of those stadiums have been improved as well. Sidelines include more backup players, cheerleaders, and mascots, while the fields are designed to degrade more accurately and look more genuine through new textures and lighting.

The most curious new feature is a new "Mascot Mode", which allows the user to do custom celebrations following a touchdown. No word on whether this will be like Euro 2008, where the celebrations are button combinations, or a Wii control where the mascot responds to your movements. NCAA 09 will also have mascot games, which just sounds wrong.

Finally, there's been improvements to online play that should make NCAA 09 a more exciting online experience; namely, online dynasties and roster file sharing have arrived. No more paying a guy on the Internet $10 for real names. Now, only for love.

Other new features in the game include:

A refined and improved recruiting system

New post-game presentation and play-by-play

Offline cooperative play with up to four players

The ability to return missed field goals

Bluffed play art to prevent people from looking at your playcalls when sitting next to you
We'll report more on these improvements when we see NCAA 09 in person later this month. Until then, we're just going to make inappropriate guesses as to what "mascot games" entail.

One of my Favorite Games! I hope they make it so you can play up to 4 players on a team like the ps2 versions. 60 fps would also be nice! I also hope they tone down the interceprtions too, as passing was somewhat hella hard when you played a good team.

Game ON!

This was one of my favorite games ever...that was until recently. EA Sports has the same list of features every single year. However, they never deliver. Think about all the times the sidelines where supposed to improve of the stadium was going to get louder. Remember when the screen would shake. These are things that don't make the key part of the game better...the fu#&ing gameplay. It is horseshit. The players run like robots the physics engine is the same as the one used on PS2. Unless the update the physics and make it more realistic I will save my $60. I just hope a couple million other fans will do the same to make them finally make an improvement. Does anyone remember when Madden first came out on PS2...it sucked and no one bought it. So the took a year off and came back with Madden 2002 which was an amazing leap from the previous version. There is no reason we can't make them do the same with the current gen game. FU#K EA SPORTS!!!

I love this game and any improvement makes me happy. Im in year 2013 and i still haven't won a national championship so i beleive they made last years a lot harder than the previous year. I cant wait to see what improvements they made to recruiting in 09

I enjoyed NCAA last year more than Madden, so I know this game will be alright for this year.

After having spent some time now with this demo...the game has some issues that doesn't mean it's not a 1000% improvement on last years game. I just don't get why EA can't hammer out the little errors like the QB glitching and lining up under the guard or tilted play side...or why everyone looks like they are spazing out like the ninja from MGS 1. Seriously, look at the ref in the demo when he is making a call or a player after the play they are having a mini seizure. Another thing that bothers me is that you can't find a single game video online of the PS3 version. EA is saying they are equal but I will not believe it until I see it....and I haven't seen it. I think NCAA 09 will be a dose of the same old glitchy mess, but I think they could get it right soon. Hopefully....I will just spend my money on movies until then.

I think you should fix that to say "this DEMO has issues" not the game. As we all know, boys and girls, demo doesn't equal finished product.

I am enjoying it. A great step up over last year's game. It's a lot smoother. The announcing doesn't seem to have changed that much but I am having so much fun with this music thing. lol.

I haven't got into a dynasty or anything yet.

Also, they seem to give out 99 team ratings a little too easily. Both Georgia and Ohio State are 99 in offense, defense, and overall.
