Default PS3 scratching discs?

Hi everyone. I was just wondering since i'm a new ps3 owner and have barely started buying blu-rays, do the discs get damaged or scratched up whenever you insert them or pull them out, like in normal loading and unloading of the disc?? Thanks.

No. I've had my PS3 for months and my discs are still scratch-free.

No quite the opposite actually .. much more durable than DVD's or CD's on that front..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc
Hard-coating technology

Because the Blu-ray Disc data layer is closer to the surface of the disc, compared to the DVD standard, it was at first more vulnerable to scratches. The first discs were housed in cartridges for protection. Advances in polymer technology eventually made the cartridges unnecessary.[39]

TDK was the first company to develop a working scratch protection coating for Blu-ray Discs. It was named Durabis. In addition, both Sony and Panasonic's replication methods include proprietary hard-coat technologies. Sony's rewritable media are sprayed with a scratch-resistant and antistatic coating. Verbatim's recordable and rewritable Blu-ray Disc discs use their own proprietary hard-coat technology called ScratchGuard.

No. I own over 100 BD discs and my PS3 has never scratched any of them.

your thinking of the wrong console, the 360 does stuff like that, just youtube, and see the damage the 360 can do, especially when standing it up. I haven't any scratches on games or bd's on ps3.

Agreed with all the OP, have watched hundreds of movies, (Blu-ray and the more susceptible to scratching, DVD's) and not one has ever been scratched by my PS3...

Well apart from the fact that BDs can't get scratched easily, the PS3 doesn't hurt them at all.
In fact, the more you play your movies in the PS3, the better they become

O.K., are you sure the marks weren't there before?

You can put a DVD/CD in (probably a cheap one you got for a present and you don't really like ) to put it to the test.

If you get marks, there might be a problem with the drive, although I have never heard such an issue... (My PS3 drive stopped working on Friday, but still my BDs were intact!)

This is the precise reason why I don't use the PS3 anymore. I tried out 5, yes, count 'em, 5, different PS3s and all of them would leave some sort of markings on the bottom of the disc. Not scratches per se, but something that would show up under light. They would wipe off, but it bothered me enough to switch to a standalone. I HATE SLOT LOADING DEVICES.

There's a thread in the HD Digest forum where a couple of other people have similar issues. I'm surprised more have not noticed these markings.

I've looked at mine under the light and not seen any marks. All my discs still look like they've never left the case.

Maybe when you put them in the case they rubbed the part that sticks through the center of the disc. I've put cds and dvds in my ps3 and they come out fine too. So i don't know how you got the marks unless someone else has removed your games.

I've had no problems of that sort either. At any rate, I'm not too worried about little marks on my disks, if they wipe off, they wipe off.
