Default Can Imported PS3's display Pal playback

Hi, newbie on hear, and can't find my answer. I live in UK and have an imported Honk Kong PS3. Now when I try to play a region 0 Pal disc, it refuses to play it saying it can't display Pal signal. Now with movies and games supposedly being region free, how am I to play any purchases on my PS3, I just don't get it, and see conflicted answers all over the place, please help.

With Blu-ray discs, the regions are divided into three: A, B and C. HK PS3 is Region A.

It is also a Region 3 DVD player but it can only play NTSC discs, even though there are Region 3 DVDs that are in PAL, just like Japanese NTSC DVDs are Region 2 but UK DVDs are in PAL.

All PS3 games are region free. You can only play Region 3 PS2 games.

So any PAL discs are of no use to me be it Blu-Ray, DVD or Blu-Ray games.

Blu-ray movies are in HD, specifically 1080p24. PS3 games (there are no Blu-ray games) are also in HD that ranges from 720p60 to 1080p60. In plain terms, they are of international standards.

DVDs follow the old TV standards: NTSC and PAL, mostly. Keep your UK DVD player and use your PS3 for PS3 games and Region A BD movies.

And read up on everything about the PS3 and Blu-ray.

Default region codes

Ok i have to add to this, i also have a hong kong ps3 and i understand that it has a A1 region code for the BD but ive been looking at buying some BD movies and on the sites selling them like playusa.com and playasia.com they dont say anything about A1 BD region but always say region code R1 athough it is a DVD region format, i would have thought that these big media sellers would know and say that it is a A1 disc instead of R1 and a link to all the dvd region codes for refrence, anyone know why this is and they dont say nothing about A1 ??
also with this post above PAL will be the format for all UK games so will this mean my hong kong ps3 will not play UK games?
again also does anyone think they will be some kind of softwear to put on the ps3 hard drive to enable it to play region free dvd's/BD movies ?

There is no Region A1. Please read the second post here.

Only the PS & PS2 games. The PS3 games are rendered in HD and playable on all PS3s.

Probably not. Keep your DVD player to play DVDs. Get another BD player or a UK PS3 to play Region B Blu-ray movies.

the PS3 has no PAL support at all at the moment. When it is released for PAL countries PAL support will be added via a firmware update.

Blu-ray regions break down into this:

Region A: America, Japan, Corea, South East Asia
Region B: Grøenland, Europa, Africa, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand
Region C: China, India, Russia, + a few others remaining in Asia

Here's a map that shows it even better:

Some Blu-rays Discs seem to be region free too (and I have 2 already that show the three region symbols (A B C) on the cover)

DVD regions on the other hand are divided in numerical regions, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0

But at least regions 0, 2, 3, and 4 have DVDs released both in NTSC standards and in PAL standards so you could subdivide those regions into:

Region 0 NTSC
Region 0 PAL

Region 2 NTSC
Region 2 PAL

Region 3 NTSC
Region 3 PAL

Region 4 NTSC
Region 4 PAL

The Hong Kong PS3 is Blu-ray Region A, DVD Region 3 NTSC
