Sony Pictures House of Flying Daggers (2004)

I love the movie, but have heard the BD is a bit of a disappointment. Should I steer clear, or is it only a minor problem?

It is one of the worst looking (if not THE worst looking) BDs I have. Colors are washed out and whites are overblown. But it has a really good soundtrack (PCM Cantonese) and if you don't own it on DVD and like the Genre it is still worth it. But maybe you should rent it first.

It looks pretty bad on Blu. I wouldn't recommend you buying it. What I don't understand is why Sony hasn't re-released it on Blu like they did with The Fifth Element? Although, that maybe due to the popularity of the title. It's not quite up there with FE.

IIRC to problem lies with the master and not the encoding, so there won't be a re-release.

I'd give it a rental as I did. I did not like the transfer. I would of thought that it would look great, but not so.

My experience was on a 36 inch set. I now have a much bigger TV which would be less forgiving.

The BD image was better than the DVD image. So if you don't have the DVD, then go for the Blu-ray.

If you have the DVD already, then I suppose you should consider the advice from this forum.

Anyone else find this movie painful to watch? And I loved Hero, Crouching Tiger, Forbidden Kingdom etc. Anyone remember what that other Chinese movie with the guy who leaps around like a frog is?

I would pass on this one as the PQ is pretty bad to awful, a pretty good flick though it's a shame.

maybe its just me but the pic quality wasnt even poor.. more like average but certainly not BAD. dont take my word for it.. this popular site agrees.. http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/16/h...ngdaggers.html

The picture of the BD is only a very small improvement over the upscaled dvd, but it does have a great PCM soundtrack with good surround use. As someone else said the master is in awful condition and likely will never look good.

I was considering it to add to my Sony Picture Classics line, but I heard the video is just awful, not even decent. I own it on UMD though...

So I bought this yesterday to upgrade my dvd, and noticed the awful reviews for the PQ. Is it really that bad? Is it worth going back out and returning or exchanging for another title? Also noticed SPC didn't port over most of the extras which I don't think I've watched anyway so not that big of a deal. The movie turns 10 this year, but it seems like an unlikely title to see a rerelease.

There is a movie with Jet Li in which he leaps like a frog. It's either 'Shaolin Temple' or 'Martial Arts of Shaolin', can't remember which one it was.

I say buy it. It's not going to make you label it a reference BD. But its a solid movie, great fights, sound effects and story.

Not much else for the Kung Fu BD fans to pick from right now.

I might as well get it...if the master isn't even in very good condition, then I doubt there's much more they could've done.
