Talking PS3 European details tonight at midnight

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/758/758082p1.html

Quote:
UK, January 24, 2007 - Sony has announced that - wait for it - it's set to announce full European launch details for the PlayStation 3 on the dot at midnight tonight, GMT.

Depending how eager you are to learn when it's out, how much for and what you can expect to be playing at launch, we'd suggest either propping your eyelids open with matches, chugging back the caffeine and heading over to the IGN European Gaming Lobby to slather in feverish anticipation, or do the sensible thing, have a good night's kip then check back on IGN first thing tomorrow.

The next wave of the domination is about to begin.

There is an outside chance of 1.5 million units being sold in the UK and Europe at launch. Almost certainly 1 million. Assuming the units are available, which they should be because Sony has well stuffed the NA and Japan channels now.

It seems like the have not problem pumping them out for sale in the states so hopefully they don't give our euro friends some lame reason that they will get some small amount of units for the launch date

STRICTLY EMBARGOED UNTIL MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY 24th JANUARY GMT

PS3 to Launch in UK on 23rd March 2007
Over 30 Titles for Launch Period
1 Million units forecast for Initial European Launch Period

London, 24 January 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that PLAYSTATION®3 will be launched in the PAL territories including the United Kingdom on 23rd March 2007 at a price of £425.

Responding to retail and consumer demand, SCEE confirmed that initially only the 60GB model would be available, with the 20GB model to follow later in the year dependent on demand.

An expected one million PS3 units will be made available during the initial launch period to all SCEE territories.

SCEE also announced a stellar launch line-up of over 30 game titles for PS3, including eagerly awaited titles published by SCEE such as Resistance: Fall of Man™, MotorStorm™, Genji™: Days of the Blade, FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION and Ridge Racer™ 7. An exceptional range of titles in every genre will also be available at launch from the world’s leading third party publishers, including Electronic Arts, Activision, Namco Bandai, Sega, Take 2, Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal, and Sony Online Entertainment.

In addition to games on disc, an exciting range of fully-featured downloadable games
will debut on the PLAYSTATION®Network. These will include gaming icons such as Tekken®: Dark Resurrection and Gran Turismo® HD Concept; the fully-featured PS3 debut of the best-selling franchise Gran Turismo, realised with full HD (1080p) visual quality. Created by Polyphony Digital Inc and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Gran Turismo® HD Concept has been downloaded by more than 350,000 users since it was released in December 2006 in North America and Japan.

Also available on the PLAYSTATION®Network will be brainteasers such as Go! Sudoku and Go! Puzzle, and innovative games such as Blast Factor™ and flOw™, designed exclusively for PLAYSTATION 3 and delivering on the promise to provide original content created by non-traditional developers and publishers.

Concurrent with the European launch, a new System Update to further enhance the entertainment potential of PS3 will be issued.

Announcing the launch details, Ray Maguire, SVP and MD of SCEUK said, “Following the hugely successful launches of PS3 in Japan and North America, we are absolutely delighted to be able to bring significant numbers of PS3 to the UK. To be able to launch with over 30 titles including retail versions and great downloadable gaming experiences across every genre shows that this is our strongest launch line-up in the history of PlayStation, and is what PlayStation fans in the UK have been crying out for.”

Wow! U.K. is getting a better launch than I did here in the U.S. I guess they deserve it for having to wait for a few months

Ouch! That's about $835 USD! I understand that the pound is strong and all but Sony is basically selling the units at cost over there.

I was expecting about 2 million total, for all the PAL regions....

Let's hope Sony meets its goal of 6 million shipped by April.

You have to take 17.5% sales tax into account which leaves Sony with $725 as they will get more favourable currency rates than 1.98:1, it will be more like 2.02:1 by then, as the pound will be stronger (rising interest rates/inflation in the UK) and Sony own a bank.

AU$999 = US$780 at today's exchange.

That's rather steep. Does that include a VAT?

More than likely.

prices are always skewed higher in the UK, be it gas, electronics or DVDs.

For reference via Amazon.co.uk, the PS2 retails for £94.99. That's 186.87 US. PS2 in the US goes for what, 99.99 these days? So it's pretty much double the price for a console from 2000.

Yes but only 10% there are not supposed to be any other tax's. It's quite cheap compared to the Panasonic BD10 AU$2,749 or the Sammy BD-P1000 AU$1,699. Don't worry the Movie's aren't much better AU$39

More than pleased with the £425 price tag considering they chucked a blu ray player in

An xbox 360 plus external hd-dvd drive is £299 + £120 = £420, although there is talk of MS clipping the price of the xbox 360 to £199 at the launch of PS3.

A million PS3,s is another potential million Blu Ray customers

Not sure if a million units is enough for the whole of Europe though?

Now if I can just get my grubby mits on 6 units at launch

Ps that price does include VAT which I will be claiming back on 1 of the units and putting the console through as a company asset.

£425 is actually what was announced when November was the global launch date. So it hasn't changed, and it's what I was expecting. Frankly all things considered it's a bargain.

I just hope I can get my name down for a launch day console - it's been reckoned that around 300,000 will be available for the UK.

I've also heard that a major firmware update is due around the same time, no idea what that might bring though (upscaled DVD playback perhaps...)

If MS do drop the price of the premium 360 to £199 I will be surprised - it will show a complete lack of faith in their own product to go head to head with PS3. I also don't think they can make such a huge drop at this point as they are still not in profit with the entire Xbox project; and an Xbox profit is something they've assured their shareholders of for 07/08 financial year (I believe)

For us in the euro-zone, the ps3 will go for 599 Euro(-dollars).

This means, simply put - currency rate 1 Euro= 1 US Dollar.

You guys across the ocean had a nice bargain for your PS3's.

Luckily this is what I hoped for (maximum price, that is).
