Default BD-J Playback on updated Sony BDP-S1

Well I finally got hold of copy of "Descent" and it played on the BDP-S1 running firmware v1.50... just!

Initially a white screen appeared with a dark square in the top left hand corner. I assumed it had locked up, but then a small loading screen appeared in the centre of the screen. It actually took about 2 1/2 mins from pressing close to bring up the main menu. Once it had loaded it played OK, although the menu changes seemed a little sluggish.

Has anyone else played this disc on the Sony player, and if so, did they have similar results?

Frankly, now I have seen the film, I wonder what all the fuss was about. Still at least I know my BDP will play BD-J discs.

Your experience is the same as mine. It plays, but it is very slow in loading, and the menu response is also very slow. But at least it does play now. Hopefully another firmware update in the future will speed things up.

Thanks for the reassurance.

If I'm not mistaken, The Desent had a file in the wrong place. The Sony update enabled the player to find that file so the disc would play. That is probably why it takes so long to load. I don't think other BD-J discs will be that sluggish.

I've had The Descent do funky things to me. It loads and everything and I hit play for the Unrated title. Then it starts playing the movie and about 2 seconds in it skips to one of those annoying "The Commentaries On This Disc blah blah blah" things. It's done it twice, but other than that it's worked fine. I also noticed after the firmware upgrade, my player's frozen up twice. Which is really nothing compared to HD-DVD which freezes up everytime I play a movie. And when that freezes up you're screwed, but on Blu-Ray when it freezes all you have to do is hit rewind and then play and it works fine.
