Default Sony's Stringer: Downloads Can't Compete With Blu-ray

Sony's Stringer: Downloads Can't Compete With Blu-ray

Even though it can sometimes be easy to make fun of Swanni, I try not to (because he does sometimes come through), but I LOVE this quote:

Quote:
Of course, Stringer has cause to downplay downloads and praise Blu-ray. Sony is the main backer of the Blu-ray high-def disc.

Supporters of digital downloads, such as Microsoft, TiVo, Apple and NetFlix, contend that Broadband speeds will soon increase and eventually make even HD downloads fast and convenient.

Stringer is right. Digital downloads wont until the network infrastructure in the US and other places improve...giving Blu-ray plenty of time.

If TWC "test" goes through and others follow, The 40 gig cap a month for highest plan, thats what possibly 3 HD movies at the most and every gig over 40 is $1, so every HD movie you rent or buy over 3 a month will have a cost of at least $10 just to your internet provider and that doesn't include doing anything else online to take away your 40 Gig. (there lowest was 5 Gig which you might actually pass if you downloaded 1 1080p trailer a day)

Time warner is doing internet usage metering. if you go over your max monthly allowance you'll get charged for it. If this become a sucess then every internet provider will follow and we'll have to Say goodbye to all you can eat package.
For me personally it won't take off. Let's hope it won't.

Last time i checked digital downloads were such a huge flop world wide.
i see more people buying movies in VHS then downloading them digitally.

digital download are not even a threat to dvd, they look and sound like crap, they will never ever be a threat to HD Blu-ray.

For the record, I agree with Stringer. My comment about laughing was in regards to the comment that made it sound like Stringer's comments could be somewhat biased, but didn't say anything about how Microsoft, TiVo, Apple, or NetFlix's might be...

With the caps on downlaods many provider are contemplating, downloading quality HD content would be difficult unless the providers of the content had contracts with the ISP exempting these downloads from the limitations.

What the article fails to mention is that Sony is supposed to launch it's own download service on the PS3 later this year, and hence will also be one of the "Supporters of digital downloads".... will be interesting to see if it has HD offerings.

Downloads are not a threat, but Sony will want to cover all the bases and get a piece of the action, since they'll have oodles of set top boxes out there with the PS3.

(Of course they failed in their proprietary music format (ATRAC) days with CONNECT)

How is Apple on that list when it sits on the BoD for the BDA? Seems like they think that even if it can be done, it will not bury Blu-ray.

That right there should tell most people what the future is.
