Default PS3 EU launch, a few details.

I have put this in the off-topic section because I would prefer that only members can see this information.

OK, I spoke to my boss today, he said that HMV might call off the pre-orders completely now, Sony have said that they will try to supply us with enough to full-fill 10-15 per store, but there is no guarantee that they will be able to do it.

The numbers that we have seen say the UK should get 300,000 units for the launch window of 3 weeks, and more after that, not all (300,000) will be available on launch night like I had previously reported.

AFAIK Game will be doing pre-orders but they have limited it to 8 for larger stores and only 4 for the smaller ones, basically Sony don't want a repeat of the mess of a launch they had in the US, with some stores not being able to full-fill their pre-orders on launch night, and others having a few spares.

I will keep this thread updated with info as soon as I get it.

Wow, that is drastic change, isn't it? It makes hitting 6 million shipped for the end of March pretty much impossible if only about a million units are available in the launch phase starting in late March.

Seems like a bit of NA all over again. Is that shortages again, or is the demand not materializing?

10-15 per store is next to nothing, isn't it?

I don't know it did not seem like they would get the unit out here in America but before the new year they were showing up everywhere so hopefully the pal areas will have the same fortune

No offense Max, but that kind of proves that the PS3 is actually selling pretty good in the USA. That being said I hope they have enough units to go around for everyone.

The demand is there, since Sony announced their date to the public, we have had many people come in asking for pre-orders. More likely it is due to shortages, Sony just reported that they have sold 1.84m out of 2.1m shipped, so they will want to build up inventory in NA/JPN territories before tey will be able to flood the channel in the EU.

The 1m figure is supposedly for the 'launch window' not launch day. Launch day will be much lower, think about it, logistically you have to get 1m consoles, that are not built yet, to arrive in France together, and then ship them from France to the UK by another boat, and using trucks/trains to get them across to Spain/Germany/France/Portugal so it is a mighty challenge.

The need to satiate that UK + Europe demand is going to lead to major shortages in North America again. People better get of their rears and get out there and get a PS/3 while they can.

It's going to be very interesting in the next 3-4 months.

The NPD January numbers will be very telling. The add-on sales should reflect the health of the HD DVD player sales in general. In fact, they may be slightly inflated due to people no longer willing to take the HD DVD standalone risk.

January may be the first month BD standalone sales surpass HD DVD standalones. I see a lot of posts from people buying Sony and Pioneer and low priced Sammy's.

They will also be inflated by the people who intend to steal software The XBox drive is a key component in the process - hope for their sake that it is not discounted too much with the intention of making it up in software sales.

Is it my imagination, or does every time Microsoft scales back (cuts projections from 15 -> 12) Sony takes the opportunity to scale back (lower availability than expected into European launch)?

The last time this happened was when the XBox 360 had a super-shortage launch that allowed Sony to delay the PS/3 until Nov. 2006.

Good point. "All those HD DVD sales represent people who are going to buy HD DVD".

I doubt they'd all buy lots of discs. They'll divy up the purchases and share the extractions. A big enough group requires almost no disc purchases.
