No real surprises here, but at least now there's some concrete material and I will be calling my stores starting tomorrow on a regular basis to see when they start up preorders.

Playstation 3 Date and Price Announced...

E3 2006: PS3 Date and Price Announced
System to come in two configurations, will cost up to $599.
by Jeff Haynes
May 8, 2006 - In a last minute bombshell, Kaz Hirai announced the specific date and details of the PS3 launch. The PS3 will be arranged in two separate system configurations: a 20 and a 60 gigabyte hard drive system. What's more, Japan will see the PS3 first on November 11th, at a price for 59,800 yen for the 20 gigabyte system setup. The 60 gigabyte system will be open ended and set by retailers. North America, Europe and Australasia will see the system six days later on November 17th. The price? $499 dollars or 499 Euros for the 20 gig version, and $599 dollars or 599 Euros for the 60 gig version. In Canadian dollars, that will come to approximately $549 dollars for the 20 gig and $659 dollars for the 60 gig version.

Hirai also announced that Sony will try to get a grand total of six million units shipped by March 31, 2007, which is Sony's fiscal date: 2 million PS3s will be available during the initial launch window, another 2 million will be shipped before the end of 2006, and finally another 2 before March 31st.

We'll have more details shortly.
So much for the $800 FUD. This will most definitely be selling like hotcakes.

As pointed out at AVS, only the 60GB version has an HDMI output.

I will wait to see that confirmed, I've seen the japanese document, but it seems unlikely that sony would go to the trouble of making two distinct consoles. it means there is no way for owners of the entry level console to upgrade to the higher priced version.

I think it is an error, and both consoles are identical aside from the hard drive.

We'll see, but it would be a first for someone to release two consoles that have physical differences like this.

Unless... Sony market the high end one at HD tv owners, and the other at regular tv owners - but that is flawed too, as eventually all CRT owners will upgrade, then find their PS3 can't connect!

Nah, I reckon it is a mistake in that document. It's not been reported anywhere else, beyond this Japanese pdf.

If only one unit has HDMI output will the other be able to output 1080P? Also will it have a dual laser pickup so it can play old DVD's as well?

Also I must apologize to GTP, I surly thought that the PS3 would be well over 500$, turns out I was wrong. However I don't think the rest of the consortium Samsung, Panasonic, and a few others that have players due out in a few months are very happy about Sony undercutting them by 500$ for a Blu-ray player, I wonder what their reaction is going to be, and if they intend on dropping their price on the Blu-ray players that they have coming out soon.

I would think the other companies would have expected a low starting price for the PS3. Perhaps they thought they'd try to get a few extra bucks while they could. OTOH, I think you've got a good point. How will these companies respond being that the standalone players will only be out five months earlier than the PS3. I'm all for them lowering the prices on their hardware right away.

I was right the 1st time when I thought it would go for 600 bucks....then I was wrong.....and I was right about the 2 system thing...then I agreed they planned on having BD on all systems available.....well, they didn't downgrade that....they did it elsewhere...

so essentially...Sony has undercut Toshiba with a price match on the HD DVD realm along with having the best videogame system available..

When I said undercut, I did not mean the HD DVD camp I meant the Blu-ray camp. If Samsungs player is supposedly going to start at around 1000$ how do they feel about Sony selling a Blu-ray player with the PS3 for only half the price, and only 4 months later. Maybe NYG is correct and they are just trying to make some money where they can, but if they are akk ib this thing together I don't see how some companies are going to be able to sell allot of players for double the price of the PS3. However people want there High Def and they want it now, "like me"! I have no doubt what-so-ever that Blu-ray is going to blow HD DVD out of the water. Think about it 1080P, for only 500$ bucks, it might take a year or two but Toshiba will eventually surrender

Hang on a minute..

If the stories are right about the 20Gb version not having memory card slots, then how do you save your games and swap content with the PSP? Even the 360 has the option of externally saving your games.

The more I think about it, the more I believe this is an error on someones part. Surely Sony aren't going to manufacture two distinct versions of the console, one with card slots and an HDMI connection, and one without!! How pointlessly expensive would that be?

come on Sony, put these rumours to sleep!

Default Stats for the 2 PS3s

http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/rele...f/060509ce.pdf

Looks like the cheap one wont have HDMI, Memory card reader,or wireless ethernet. Looks like the $600 one is the only real choice. The cheaper one is a waste of money and really made to get their price point palatable while in essence making the higher priced one seem like a deal.

Ok Sony $600 bucks it is

I don't see how.

The $499 gets you a complete videogame system out of the box. You'll have a good sized hard drive in 20 GB that most people will never fill up. In fact, I have yet to run into someone who's burned up their entire hard drive on current gen consoles. If that really is the case, learn how to delete old stuff.

Honestly: With a hard drive, who the hell even uses a memory card anymore?

As nice as they are, HDMI and Wi-fi are NOT essentialls for a videogame console.

The $499 gets you a system that you'll be able to connect to any TV, including an HDTV via component, and still get the HD resolutions on the games. (at least.)

I don't see what the complaining is about from some people.

Unlike MS, the hard drive was made mandatory right off the bat, so game developers know they can count on it.

The Xbox360 CORE package fits your description to a tee. Not this. I still believe MS should have just gone with the Premium and nothing else and people could take it or leave it. People that bought the Core got screwed. At that point, they had a MANDATORY out of pocket extra expense for a hard drive, at least, and if you bought the premium 360...you saved what? About $150 at least, or so vs. if you had bought the Core and those same items seperately?

Now, if you're an HT guy that's got to have it all, then yeah, you're going for the $600 unit. I know I am.

Unless I'm really misunderstanding something...you don't need memory cards if you have a hard drive anyways. It's been that way since the first Xbox.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Guys... A PS3 at $/€499 vs an Xbox360 at $/€219...
I don't think it'll have a lot of success. Price not ready for adoption by the masses. The PS3 won't have the success PS2 had..
I agree that Wifi and the memory card interface is not needed but HDMI is really quite important.
With analogue output only, the BD movies could be downres'ed when played.
It would seem foolish to spend so much on a console and be locked in to the past with the outputs.
Some people might not care... but many will or at least should care
Anyways... $600 for me too. I want the WiFi features for PSP interactivity as well
