Default lamp replacement

i was playing some ps3 earlier and all of a sudden i heard a pop and the tv went blank...turns out the lamp went dead on my sisters Sony KDF-E60A20. its a pretty nice sized tv, although only 1080i, but i have my 42 inch westinghouse 1080p lcd as a backup (makes it look so small compared to my sisters tv) but its in the basement which is unfinished (new house). we should be getting started on finishing it these next few weeks which will end up being my bedroom/entertainment room.

so i went searching online for prices on replacement bulbs and also some help from avsforum so i know from what people are saying there is to stick with the Osram XL-2200 which is the exact same model Sony uses in the tv. my question is, for those who have had to replace their tv lamps, should i just get the lamp by itself or lamp with housing? any suggestions/help would be appreciated, thanks.

That XL-2200 should be the only part number you need. That'll come with the lamp which will include a housing as well, as the lamp is kind of molded into the housing.

Jesus . . . Best Buy sells these for 245, I found it for 198.

It should just come like that. No assembly required.

IMHO - housing only. It literally takes 30 seconds to replace. Certain OEM's though only come housed anyways.

First, make sure it's the lamp. I say this because I just sold my KDF-E55A20 to a guy. When he got it home and set up, he turned it on and the set flashed and then went blank. Further attempts resulted in the standby light flashing red six times, which indicates a blown thermal fuse. I found instructions through AVS on how to replace it for him, so now I'm just waiting for the part. Just thought I'd throw that out in case that was what you were seeing. Evidently, the blown thermal fuse is a common design flaw on some of these models.

Anyway, for the lamp: I purchased just the lamp online for ~$125 shipped (can't remember where right now). It took a little shoe-horning to get the sucker into the housing, but I eventually got it all back together correctly. My best advice would be to make SURE you understand how the lamp fits into the housing before you remove the old one. Take pictures. Had I done that, it would have saved a lot of frustration. Other than that, it's a simple fix. Oh, and get some long allen wrenches. It will make removing the lamp housing much easier. Good luck.

Yeah retail prices on these stink.

And that is a good point -- make sure the description specifies that it comes in housing.
