Just curious if this is possible. I almost need to block amazon to keep me from spending too much money. I use firefox btw. Does anyone know of a way to do this? I suppose I could always "unblock" it, but I think if it's blocked initially it would at least serve as a deterrent to keep me in check.
thanks in advance. |

Seeing as how corporations can do this (Like the company I work for) I'm positive there is a way.. but I don't know how off the top of my head.
I'm almost with you on amazon though. I stopped going to Best Buy and CC and have been shopping BLU on amazon exclusively for about a year now. My wife is not happy.. lol |

It's relatively simple, and this will work best:
Go to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc Open the file HOSTS with notepad. Add the line as follows (to the end): (edit, don't make it a hyperlink like it did here, just enter the text) 127.0.0.1 www.amazon.com Save the HOSTS file. You may have to reboot, but that will block it. Then just remove the line and reboot to unblock it. Other ways entail using 3rd party DNS (like opendns.org) or configuring the router to block it. If you want to do these, I can fill you in on the basics of doing this. I actually use and like opendns.org, (and it's free) as the settings apply to any of my PCs connecting through the DNS (you define what is your network, by MAC, etc). And I can edit the settings from anywhere by logging into opendns.org. But shoot for the HOSTS file. Works quite well. |

Most basic Routers/Firewalls have some sort of web filter in them as well. At work we are using Webblocker on our Watchguard firewall, we also use some DNS filtering as provided above on some computers (Except we do ours through a proxy server). Even the Linksys fifty dollar routers have web filters in them though. I prefer this method over DNS.

i came in contact with, web wise, in a coffee shop that i frequented. it would not allow users to view ANY kind of nudity. i mean, not even "non porn" nudity. after soooo long, i finally wiggled around it. my point is... if you're going to go to amazon.com, you're going to go there. just because it wont be REALLY easy, doesn't mean you wont do it.
