Question Help Setting Up for Perfect Sound

My setup is a PS3 2.4 firmware, a Sony 42" HDTV, and a kinda-old Sony reciever (one that doesn't support HDMI). I currently have my system set up like this:

PS3 HDMI ---> TV
PS3 Fiber Optic cable ---> reciever

When I don't use my surround sound, I have it set to output only through HDMI, and I mainly use my TV's generic stereo sound but I had a question. What's the difference between the Linear PCM and Bitstream? Should I be using one or the other for one setting or the other?

well, if you intend to listen through your TV over HDMI I would set to Linear PCM.

But if you are outputting over Optical cable, definitely set to Bitstream.

So does that mean that bitstream is the best way to go? From my understanding, LPCM is the best for uncompressed audio only if you have it going HDMI.

yes, LPCM going to the TV over HDMI will give you 2.0 Lossless audio (obviously tv speakers limit the benefits)

and with Optical cable you must set to Bitstream to get the "core" 5.1 audio.
