E3 2008: Media Download Service Announced
Launches tonight -- get your wallet ready!
by Nix
July 15, 2008 - At Sony Computer Entertainment's 2008 Media Briefing, SCE announced its long-awaited video download service. Its partners include Fox, MGM, Lionsgate, Warner, Disney, Paramount and Turner. This service includes movies, TV and much more. Separating this from other video services, the video will all be able to be transferred to the PlayStation Portable.

As far as pricing goes, TV shows will be available in both HD and SD, starting at $1.99. Movies start at $2.99 for rental, and $9.99 to buy. The download service browser is quite similar to the PlayStation Network front end, so those used to buying games on the service will be familiar with the interface. The service offers a video preview of its content (which can be full-screened), and also lists details such as run time, language and description. It should take about
1 hour for a 2-hour movie to download, and the service offers progressive download to watch video as it's streaming in.

Movies demoed for the service include 3:10 to Yuma, Reservoir Dogs. The Eye, The Terminator , SuperBad, Spider-Man, Rambo, Cloverfield, The Bank Job, Spiderwick, Naponlean Dynamite and many more.

Surprising the audience, SCE announced that the service will launch tonight, July 15th – if you have further questions on the service's integration, you can check it our yourself when the service launches this evening.

I'd consider an occasional rental but the HD rentals are $5.99 each, so I'll pass.

With that price for HD rentals, it would be cheaper to drive to my local blockbuster and rent a blu-ray for 2.99 (Only applies when in-store exchanges run out) or 4.99 without the online rental.

Yes, but you don't have to leave your house and drive to Blockbuster!

Considering how the price of gas is going up, how far does your BB have to be from your house vs. your MPG to hit the break-even point?

I'm going to try it tonight.

$5.99 for severely compressed online HD rentals? Not for me. Might as well just use HD PPV from my satellite TV service (not that I've been using that at all either).

Hollywood Video and Hastings both have locations within a mile or two of home. Hollywood Video charges $4.99 for a 5-day Blu-ray rental. Hastings charges $5.99 for a 7-day Blu-ray rental, but will credit your account $2 if you bring back the disc before closing the next day.

Well, I have 3 Blockbusters within a mile around me (one in every direction) plus my car is 4-Banger so my gas mileage is affordable.

I don't need to drive to blockbuster, I think I can walk the 50 yards from my place to the closest Blockbuster.

It may be that they are launching it gradually to blocks of IP addresses. That way they can resolve any issues before a mass attack.

I've never understood how these download models are expected to succeed when the prices are equal to or greater than retail. I can rent a Blu for less than $5.99 and it will be of better quality so why would I pay $5.99 to download it?

Convenience? Sure, maybe if I never had to leave my house. But I still have to go out to work and to get groceries, so stopping off at a movie place isn't that difficult.

Just like downloading games like warhawk. Why would I pay the same price to download it from the PSN as buying it from a store. Plus buying it from a store supports local jobs and I don't have all these stupid DRM type restrictions

Downloads should mean less middlemen and thus should equal lower prices. Downloads also currently mean lesser quality and thus should definitely equal lower prices

Downloads is just another way for them to get your money. Plus, they don't last as long as buying the product, you cant bring the game/movie to a buddys house unless you bring your console with you (which is a hassle). Like I said for the millionth time: They always try to be creative but usually ends up being something stupid.

Is this full 1080p, I guess not? What would be the exact resolution and how long would it take to download a full length movie?

At any rate, Neflix is still the best deal. $17 per month, 3 movies at a time and almost unlimited rental. You can't beat that!

Default Can these also be put on your iPod?

I've tried plugging the iPod into my PS3 but not much success.

There is some software that let's you connect the Mac and PS3 as Media Servers.

We'll have to see.

Can't wait to try something.

For your sake, an iPod connection would be very beneficial but not for those who just want to rent and watch.

I'm hoping for an update one day that'll let me watch a movie, download content from the PSN, update the system, etc. all at the same time without waiting for each one to finish.

Well, I may actually use this when I move back into school. Seeing how I just have basic cable when at school, I don't have the option for on demand or what not. Unfortunately there aren't any Blockbusters near by, so this will definitely be an option for me at least.
