Blu-ray Samurai

I read in another forum that Star Wars Episode 2 was under 1080, so I was just curious about some other movies, namely Inland Empire. Are there a lot of movies being shot now that barely make the HD resolution? When did digital movies start being shot in HD resolution (1080)?

The resolution depends upon the camera, most tv shows that are shot digitally are 1080i. |

I understand all of this and in fact knew both of those facts already. My question is concerning certain movies coming to blu-ray, and in the future, higher resolution capable formats. I'd say 2001 ASO could easilly go to any resolution because of the way it was shot. However, lots of digital movies are limited entirely by their pixel count. I can't seem to find pixel counts for movies anywhere, so I'm asking about it here.

the Star Wars movie used a 1080 x 1440 camera so the resolution you saw on a print would been extracted from the 800 x 1440 area, so taking into account the 35mm anamorphic prints's CameraAperture vs ProjectorAperture dimension differences about 768 x 1380 would be seen on screen. An equivalent of about 666 x 1590 square pixels. The next Star War movie (and Sin City) for example were done with newer full 1080 x 1920 cameras.

Thank you both for clearing that up for me. That's a shame Inland Empire was shot like that. You'd think with David Lynch being so obsessed with the quality of tv, darkness of the room, and sound setup that he'd want as good a picture as possible. I guess that's asking too much.
![]() Do either of you, or anybody else, have any links to sites that would explain all of this in further detail? |
