Default True Dolby HD

I usually like to keep up with newer technologies so I was wondering if anyone can say from experience that true Dolby hd sounds better. I have a yamaha receiver now, using a ps3, going through an optical cable. In order for me to switch I have to spend around 400.00 to get an updated receiver. I just was looking for help regarding if it is worth the expense. My current receiver is a 7.1 yamaha but no true hd. Thanks

The lossless codecs all sound the same. It's not a matter of the codec but of the source material / encoded bitrate.

not knowing what that means are you saying that buying a new receiver is a waste or not.

bro i just spent the $400.00 and am very happy with my ONKYO, the uncompressed audio is a huge upgrade from dd or dts....

If uncompressed is a 10/10, dd and dts are about a 5/10 if that...

which onkyo did you buy? I've always purchased yamaha and was thinking about the 663. I assume the onkyo is hd. Correct.

I think he misunderstood the question and you misunderstood his answer.

I am now using my ps3 instead of my samsung bluray player. I did this in order to take advantage of the hd audio. My yamaha 7.1 receiver is not hd capable. I have 7 definitive technology speakers plus the sub. Sounds like it is a good idea to upgrade. What receiver would you recommend keeping in mind I still need to achieve true 1080p for video. Anything in the 4-6 hundred range.

Onkyo 705, 606 or 605 will all be fine, as should the Yamaha 663. I have the 705 and love it!

Does your Yamaha receiver have multichannel analog inputs? If so, then it is "hd capable". You would just need to run the multichannel analog outs from your Samsung BD player to the Yamaha, and presto: lossless audio-- at least in LPCM. If your player will decode TrueHD into LPCM, then you also have lossless audio with THD material. I know of no Samsung player that will internally decode DTSHDMA, so you're out of luck there.

If your receiver does not have multichannel analog ins, then you're stuck with getting a new receiver.

Alright, I'd suggest the Onkyo 805 in my sig (which is better than the 605 and 705) which would be the best receiver in that price range.

i concede this, but it still begs the question: why are there different codecs to begin with if they all sound the same? to create an artificial market?

I think uncompressed was going to be there in the first place to make things simpler. But then DTS and Dolby had to get a piece of the pie too, so they came up with their formats, which may be good for Blu-ray since people have heard of DD and DTS before from DVD's and theaters. That's what could've happened.

From your setup, I presume you're asking if lossless multichannel (PCM, TrueHD, DTSHDMA) sounds better than lossy multichannel (DD, DTS). The answer is yes, they definitely do. Whether or not it's worth $400 for you to upgrade to be able to hear it is a personal thing. Good DD and DTS are no slouches; But if you're looking for the best video AND audio experience from Blu-ray, I would strongly recommend it.

If your receiver has 5.1 or 7.1 analog inputs, another option for you for lossless audio that might be less than $400, would be to get a dedicated BD player that has 5.1/7.1 analog outs. All BD players will pass LPCM via analogs, most will decode TrueHD and pass it out the analogs, and very few will decode DTSHDMA and pass it out the analogs (these will run you more than $400). If you want to stick with the PS3, then your only option would be to upgrade to a receiver which implements HDMI audio.

Personally, I didn't notice a big difference. I upgraded from a Denon AVR 1804 ($400 receiver 75W per channel) to the new Denon 3808CI ($1600 receiver 135W per channel) and I wasn't blown away by Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio. I have a PS3 with HDMI.

Some things it sounds a little better, but overall if you're looking to get blown away save your $400. I think most people in this field, myself included, tend to hear better sound to make themselves feel better about their purchase.

There isn't even that big a difference between SACD and regular CD but some people swear it's like night and day.

Baloney. This is pure FUD. All the new sound codecs are radically superior to the old and it is so sonically obvious that it is stunning.

I know you are entitled to your opinion, however, we're supposed to be helping the OP out, not confusing him. Please don't say such things. That makes it sound like we're here wasting people's money on something that doesn't make any difference.

Yeah I didn't think that would be popular around here. I'm just saying, I wasn't blown away. It wasn't like going from DVD to Bluray. It's probably going more from S-Video to Component video. Most people aren't going to be able to tell a difference without a back and forth side by side comparison.

I guarantee that any of my friends who aren't home theater enthusiasts like me would not be able to tell the difference. However, they can tell a difference between DVD and Bluray.

All I'm saying is I disagree that it's the groundbreaking experience some other posters make it out to be. That being said; do I have it? Yes. Am I glad? Yes. It's cool.

Why would you disagree with other people's experiences? I've had tons of people come over and hear the difference and they all agree that HD audio formats are way better than lossy codecs. So are you disagreeing with that too?

I should re-word that. You got me there. I didn't seem to experience such a difference as the other posters here have indicated they did; therefore in my experience it wasn't that big a deal.

Maybe I just don't have it turned up enough. Do you guys all crank it or something? I mean it does sound good but I just wasn't floored. Were you guys all floored SACD? I just put one in and it was nice but...

Maybe I should listen to a section of movie using the DD or DTS track and then watch it again with the lossless track. Anyone have any suggestions on which movie and track? I'm starting to think there's something wrong with my hearing.
