Default No Dolby True HD?

Here is something for all of you that didn't know. Just because our Blu-Ray and HD DVD discs say Dolby True HD we can't actually use it.

Why is my receiver not showing Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, when the disc is showing that those formats are available through the disc?

Onkyo A/V receiver’s from TXSR 605 and up can decode Dolby TrueHD and the DTS –HD Master bitstream audio data. Currently there is no Blu-Ray or a HD DVD players on the market with the ability of providing this bit for bit audio streams. Players currently on the market are decoding True HD and DTS HD data and sending it through the HDMI connection as PCM. Because of this the receiver will display PCM Multi Channel. Only when players have the ability to send bitstream signals to the receivers will the receivers be able to decode the signal. Only then will True HD, Dolby Plus or DTS HD be displayed on the front panel.

It doesn't matter what receiver or player you buy, until they release a player that will actually put this out we only have PCM.

When a player decodes and converts Dolby TrueHD (or DTS-HDMA when players start decoding that) to PCM, it's the EXACT same thing. So you're still getting Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HDMA.

Yup - all current decoding is done in the player instead of the receiver

The end result is the same.

It's like using analog for your SACD or DVD-A player. Nothing shows on your receiver because it's receiving straight PCM.

This is old news, but Im sure useful to the newbs.

The new Samsung BD players along with I believe the Sharp will have capability to stream advanced codecs via their 1.3 HDMI outputs.

So, even though the PS3 says it supports True HD, it does not? I assume they can fix this with a FW update?

So what should I pick for say on The Fifth Element Remastered. True Dolby HD or the PCM 5.1 track.

Also are there any 7.1 Blu-ray discs out yet as I would love to hear that.

I just picked up the new Onkyo 605 today because I wanted the whole PCM/DTHD/DTSMA audio, should I have waited and stuck with my Yamaha receiver that didn't have any HDMI ports?

It DOES support TrueHD.

It decodes the TrueHD into PCM and outputs it that way.

TrueHD is losslessly compressed PCM. The PS3 unpacks the TrueHD into PCM and outputs it.

This is the same thing the receiver would do if you sent it to it as TrueHD.

It doesn't matter which receiver you have, you're going to be listening to lossless audio regardless. Whether a TrueHD track is sent to your receiver as PCM or as trueHD is the same thing, the only difference is which piece of equipment is doing the decoding.

With the Cell processor in the PS3 doing all the decoding you're probably getting a better result than letting the 605 do it for you anyway.

For T5E - the TrueHD is the better track as it is 20-bit instead of 16-bit, but switch between the two a few times and make your own decision.

If the PS3 sent the audio to the receiver "unpacked", would the receiver display Tru HD instead of Multichannel PCM?

My old receiver didn't have multi channel PCM so that is why I thought I mostly needed a new one, otherwise I had to listen to Blu-ray on regular Dolby Digital.

If the PS3 decodes it, there would be no reason for your reciever to display Dolby TrueHD.

It would say PCM, cause the PS3 is decoding it to PCM.
