Graphic Novels.

Has anyone here dabbled into Graphic Novels? I never really had any interest until I really put together that some of the movies I really love come from graphic novels like V for Vendetta and Sin City. I went out last night and at the suggestion of a friend, purchased The Watchmen. I was a little hesitant as to weather i'd like it but wow, I absolutely love it.

I think these things are absolutely awesome. Once I am done with it I am going to go out and purchase the whole Sin City series. My questions are: Is there anyone here who also enjoys graphic novels and is there any other that someone would suggest I pick up if I love the Watchmen?

Pick this one up...written by Alan Moore also ...The Killing Joke you can't miss it it has a picture of the Joker laughing on it.
Also you might want to check out The Dark Knight by Frank Miller,From Hell by Moore also.

graphic novels are different than trade paperbacks. some being mentioned are trade paperbacks. a graphic novel is one story all by itself contained in one section. usually that's how it is anyway. there are some graphic novels that are a series and all. as for which ones to recommend, that's hard. i haven't read that many but i'll make a short list of the ones i've enjoyed. here you go:


the new mutants
batman: digital justice
excalibur - the sword is drawn
excalbur - weird war III


the list is small, but it's all i can think of at the moment.

Reading the definitions of both it is hard to tell the difference. Most of the time they are used interchangably

A graphic novel is a type of comic book, usually with a lengthy and complex storyline similar to those of novels

In comics, a trade paperback refers to a collection of stories originally published in comic books, reprinted in book format, usually capturing one story arc from a single title or a series of stories with a connected story arc or common theme from one or more titles. Although trade paperback is actually a publishing term that refers to any book with a flexible cardstock cover which is larger than the standard mass market paperback format

this is true. the examples in the post above mine though are good examples of what constitutes a trade paperback and not a graphic novel. civil war was released back in 2006 as an epic cross over mini-series. the trade paperback does not count as a graphic novel since it was already released in comic book form. look at it this way: a graphic novel is usually a separate story that is outside of the character's comic book. it is something that cant be used in the regular series of comic books and therefore is used as a graphic novel. back in the 80's graphic novels were a way of telling more adult stories without getting in trouble from the comic code. most graphic novels in the 80's couldn't be sold to minors.

Well I have not considered reading graphic novels to be honest but I really liked the graphics in Sin City or 300 (not sure this one's from a graphic novel)
I'm looking forward to Sin City 2

Sounds like in this context you mean buying/collecting. Myself, no but I wanted to buy a few like Watchmen and V For Vendetta.
