Default How do Lightsabers work?

How do you think light sabers work under the hood? I have an Idea on how they could work

When the button is pressed, it activates system that releases High energy positively charged ions. and to make the blade rise out of the hilt, negatively charged waves bombard the positively charged Ions causing them to repel, the waves would have to be controlled to prevent a super long blade of course.

What are your ideas?

Ask yoda, he's the one who invented the lightsabers.

I read a couple of books. I think there is a jewel or something inside the grip.

They don't?

Star Wars is mostly science fantasy without a whole lot of "Hard" Sci-Fi backing it up.

I think it was on the show The Science of Star Wars or something like that where they said it was most likely impossible to create a real working lightsaber.

If you watch the Venture Bros. the Tag Sale, You're It! episode has a pretty funny lightsaber bit.

Actually what they do is just swing around a green plastic tube attached to a fancy handle and then they use an optical special effect in the editing room to make it glow.
