Opinion – am I being scammed? - Blu-ray Forum

I put up on craigslist.com an Xbox speaker system. In very close succession, I received these two emails from two different email addresses:

How are you?Hope you are cool?
I'm very much interested in your item,i hope it's in good condition,
kindly get back to me as soon as possible if still available...
REGARDS

Hey do you still have this item for sale
get back to me asap

So I write back thinking these people are local stating I still have the system, and ask where they are located. These are the replies I got:

Hello
Nice to hear back from you, But i want to bring to your attention
that i wont be able to pick the item up, simply because i am not
around.Iam presently in Cyprus on an official trip. I want to buy the item for
my colleague who just left for abroad.I will add $100 for the shipping and payment via PayPal.
So kindly get back to me with your PayPal email address so that i
send the payment to you ASAP...........

Good to read from you... Well i will like you to get back to me with
your Paypal email address so that i can send the payment to you via my
PayPal account and you can help me ship it to the confirmed address
from PayPal, cos i cant really pick the item up from you due to my
busy schedules at work. Furthermore, i will be responsible for the
shipping of the item in which i will add the shipping and handing fee
via USPS Mail signed..

Seems to be too much urgency, not to mention both messages look like they could have been written by the same person. Also, both came from .aol accounts.

So, am I just being paranoid?

Sounds iffy to me. You shouldn't have any trouble selling the system locally for cash. I'd hold off.

This is the reply I sent to "both" people:

You’ll excuse me if I say that I have received two emails from supposedly two different people (written very similarly) and the whole thing seems like it might be a scam.

Besides, if your offer is legitimate, the whole reason I put the system on craigslist was to avoid Paypal & shipping.

If you can arrange for someone locally to pick up the speakers & give me cash, that would be acceptable.

Scam. I have seen the exact same emails before. There was a thread, it may have been on here, where the seller kept messing with them and asking weird questions. It was hilarious.

Very easy to spot this fake; Notice the generic tone and complete lack of personal touch. No mention of your name either. Phony.

dude its a scam, give them a fake paypal address...within minutes you will receive an email for a pending payment stating once you ship it and prove delivery they will release funds. Paypal doesnt work like that and all Paypal transactions show up in the detail page at Paypal.com.

Scam. Do in person transaction only with dealing with craigslist. I've done three deals recently for PS1 games all in person.

But, you'll all be happy to know I can buy Viagra for $1 and I've won the UK lottery! And I didn't even have to buy a ticket!!
