Ok I know I allready have had this topic on here but It's about a year later and things have changed. Today have another contender, EVD (Enhanced Versitile Disc). Who do you think will win.
BD-ROM faces an uphill challange because it dosen't have as many supporters as HD-DVD (such as evey company on DVD Fourm). Don't forget though that BD cna have a 50gb capasity if it is dual-layered. On the other hand, HD-DVD is limited by its expanded technology, only maxing out at 23gb on a HD-DVD DL Disc (remember BD-ROM is 50gb). EVD is a chinese solution to the pirocy problem in around the world. But, if there ar not as many pirated copies then sales would be much higher for Blu-ray & HD-DVD. Also, many legal copies of today's DVDs are made in China. If the Chinese Government bans the production of Blu-ray & HD-DVD in China and only allows the production of EVD, then there might not be as many BDs and HD-DVDs on the market. In the end the Movie studios and software giants will decide. |

I personally don't think that having the support of the DVD Forum is such a big deal. It certainly doesn't mean that every company that's a member of the DVD Forum is behind the format, just look at all the Blu-ray supporters, they are also part of the DVD Forum.
Also, the interest for joining the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) seems to be pretty high. More than 70 people representing 42 companies attended the first information seminar held in San Jose, and in Tokyo, 400 people from more than 200 companies attended the conference. Attendees came to the events to hear about how they can play a role in the format creation, technology contribution, and working level of BDA's operations. I totally agree that Hollywood will decide which format becomes the successor for pre-recorded movies, but applications such as HDTV recording and PC drives will benefit a lot from the extra storage space, so I think Blu-ray has an edge there. It's also very hard to have an opinion about HD-DVD as they haven't released a lot of information about the specs. |

I heard that the DVD Forum support for "HD-DVD" resulted from one meeting where they voted on a rule chamge that meant not so many members needed to be there to decide such things, and then immediately after voted on the HD-DVD proposal - so it was supported due the lack of certain opposition being present at the meeting...
I can't recall where I heard this but it does make some sense since so many BD supporters are typically involved in the DVD Forum... BTW, EVD is little more than MPEG2 on standard DVD's. I can't see it being of much interest outside of China. Cheers! DAve. |
