A Blu-ray Disc player/recorder should work no differently than a DVD player/recorder. The difference is that the laser wavelength, numerical aperture and cover layer have been changed to increase the storage capacity.

The protection layer, also known as the cover layer is simply a thin layer that protects the disc from dirt and dust on the disc surface.

Numerical aperture (NA) is a unitless measure of the ability of a lens to gather and focus light. A numerical aperture of 1 implies no change in parallel light beams. The higher the number, the greater the focusing power and the smaller the spot (which means that you can fit more information).
