On the Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray, there is a trailer for Pinocchio, which we heard was just announced with details on the release for March.
However, the trailer is in a 4:3 ratio, aka 1.33. I thought this was just a trailer they threw on from the DVD, but then I start to think... Wide screen movies were made to compete against television. To get a better experience in the theater, and hence worth spending the money to see a movie out, the screens and movies were made in a wider aspect ratio. Eventually they got a little crazy with cinema-scope, and some other wider formats, but usually modern films are made at 2.39:1 or 1.85:1. I realized that Pinocchio was released in 1940, making it almost 70 years old, and that is old enough for the OAR to NOT be wide screen. I did a little sleuthing and found that Pinocchio was originally released in 1.37:1 aspect ratio, just slightly wider than the standard 4:3 TV. So now I think the trailer WAS in HD... since it was very high quality despite the aspect ratio. I guess what I am asking is, is this really going to be a 1.37:1, non-wide screen release? Or is it possible I am mistaken or something? I will still get this, but I can see the complaining starting already. "Why isn't this HD? What happened to the wide screen? What's with the black boxes? Is my TV broken?" etc.etc.etc... |

I am glad they are not going to morph it then to make it wide screen.
I just fear the complaints and confusion that will arise. As for the Disney View, that is a great idea. I hope you can customize it, or at least chose from different panels to use. I like the idea of having something there to show people it is suppose to be in this aspect. Plus having something like the wood carving filigree used in the film would be nice. |

No matter what, you're going to see the film exactly as it was intended, in the Original Aspect Ratio. Like many other films that are not 1:85:1, there will be bars (more specifically, pillars) to fill in the missing screen area, just in this case they will be vertical instead of horizontal. You won't be missing anything, nor will you be experiencing the film in any way other than it was intended. In the end, that should be what we all aim for: a true theater experience at home. I for one can deal with the pillar issue...

Thank god it's being released at 1.37. The fight for films to be brought on DVD in their widescreen forms would've been a waste if film companies started releasing fullscreen films like Pinocchio in a fake widescreen. I'm glad Disney is making the right choice.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
![]() I am curious as to why 1.37:1 films are released as 1.33:1 (4:3). Surely it's possible to accomodate a 1.37:1 AR. Does 1.33:1 not imply that the film is cropped slightly? Surely that's unnecessary. I must be missing something. |

1.33 is shorthand. I think most 1.37 films are released 1.37. On DVDs overscan would cause these to be 1.33 anyway. On blu-ray hi-def sets, this is not the case.

Even today, with most movies shown on an aspect ratio of at least 1.85:1, some info is still lost on the sides sometimes, due to the fact that some theaters don't adjust their screens and/or curtains adequately. |

![]() Thank you for *all* the AR information, although everyone seems to have their own idea, and I'm slightly still confused. ![]() I watched my new Sleeping Beauty blu-ray yesterday, and enjoyed seeing the film in its OAR. It is the first 2.55:1 transfer I believe I have ever seen. The extras on the disc were good too; I liked the little documentaries on its making. This seems to bode well, and I hope Pinochio is as good. I really wish Disney would not bombard one with advertisements before the main menu though. They have always done that! |
