Default The Wrestler

So there isn't much talk about small films coming out and I wanted to point this one out.

Just saw this tonight at the Chicago International Film Festival and let me tell you....this is a beautiful and heartbreaking film. I used to be a fan of wrestling when I was in high school, but since lost interest. If anyone has seen the documentary "Beyond the Mat" they should definitely check this movie out.

It's directed by Darren Aronofsky (his most straight forward film) and stars Micky Rourke as an aging professional wrestler from the 1980s who is forced to retire after a heart attack threatens to kill him the next time he wrestles. He takes a job at a deli, attempts to form a relationship with an aging stripper (Marisa Tomei) and does his best to reconcile with his estranged daughter (Evan Rachel Wood). However, he is drawn to the prospect of a rematch with his old wrestling nemesis the Ayatollah (Ernest Miller), even though the fight may cost him his life.

This film is amazing so please check this out. The wrestling is great, the acting is great, the story is great, and I'm man enough to admit that there were moments I teared up. There were also some really hilarious moments.

This movie is beautiful, yes I said beautiful!

For people who don't like Aronofsky's work, don't worry there are no crazy edits, cuts, or crazy "artsy" film making. Just a straight story with a lot of heart.

Don't wait for the blu-ray on this one (if it comes out on it). This movie is worth going to your theater, or "art house" theater, when it comes out.

Thumbs up

I've heard only good things about this, being a wrestling fan, I would enjoy it anyway, but I've heard it's a very good movie regardless. Plus, it has Ernest "The Cat" Miller in it, can't go wrong lol

I always liked his James Brown gimmick.

I'm looking forward to seeing this. I've been reading about it for a while and have heard nothing but good reviews for it.

As a (mostly old school) wrestling fan, I'm looking forward to it.

This looks so good, I can't wait. I'm an old school Rourke fan and hearing a lot of early screenings prompting critics talking Oscar potential for him is astounding. What a comeback that would be, as he was all but written off a few years back.

I've been following this movie for atleast a year now. It looks fantastic, and I really hope this can give the boost to Mickey he has been needing for the last decade.

Me too!

They ran The Wrestler twice. He was there the first time and I got to meet him. I got very excited. Just shook his hand and told him how much I really loved his films.

I hope he does direct Robocop. Not getting my hopes up though. Remember he was suppose to direct Batman Year One and Watchmen?

This movie isn't tied to Vince in any way, so it will most likely be good.

Hopefully they do the art of Pro Wrestling justice.

I know this movie has a limited release for 12/17, but where the H is it playing? I don't want this to be so limited that I have to drive 50 miles to it (I live in Baltimore so it's not like there's a lack of population).

Thats the problem with limited movies, you never know where they are goin to play! but I have 2 indy theaters and they always play the limited films but sometimes they play them really late
