Hahahaha. No HD DVD drive. Classic. Just shows how much Microsoft is behind their format of choice...not.

I was thinking the same thing. They don't seem to have a lot of faith in the format if they release an updated machine without a high def drive. I think it's funny that the machine is going to cost as much as a 20G PS3 but still doesn't have an HD drive or Bluetooth.

I suspect the real reason for this is they intend to start pushing movie downloads and the 360 needs HDMI and a bigger drive for that to be viable.

Its all but official Jorg.

The point, as I stated in my article, is that this decision very much validates many of the PS3 design choices. What we've heard in the past is that consumers don't want this stuff and the PS3 is too expensive, and now we see an XBox with more playstation3-esque features and a very high price tag. Guess Sony is not so crazy after all?

This is like throwing money after bad.

Damon already said it succinctly: This is going to be a PS3-wannabe, except that at THAT price, it still won't have a HD-DVD drive. It would be crazy for any of the X-Box 360 fanbois or fans in general to NOT see this as it is. All it takes is for Phil Harrison to spin this version as a PS3-wannabe. Then it'd be fun to see Peter Moore counter that argument, if he can.

Default New high-end X-BOX 360 with HD-DVD add on drive costs $79 more then a Sony PS3

Here is a new article on the X-box 360 high-end model for $479. For $479 one gets a HDMI output and a 120GB hard drive. If one adds the external HD-DVD drive for $200 this means the X-BOX is now $79 more expensive then the Sony PS3 60GB version with HDMI.
Both the X-BOX 360 and PS3 can have their hard drives upgraded to larger sizes.
What is interesting is Microsoft representative has said that the HD-DVD format is “not proven”. Maybe Microsoft when they come out with a XBOX third generation in a few years will have a BLU-RAY drive built in.
Interesting quote
The game maker decided not to install the HD DVD drive in the new Xbox 360 because the format was “not proven,” according to a quote in Game Informer from a Microsoft representative.”

Well let's put it in an even footing. If one upgrades the PS3 drive to 120GB, that's US$82 (at NewEgg) more; you can't sell off your original drive because it's needed should you have any problems with the PS3.

However, I hear that to add wireless ability for the controller costs another US$100 or so for the X-Box 360? Is that true?

then dont sell off the hard drive. thats just stupid. lol. i mean if you bought the ps3 from best buy then it doesnt really matter cuz you could just get a new one instantly. but if not and you only have sony's warranty then do as the man told you. save that drive.

To add wireless to the system it's $100 US, but not for the controller. The wireless controller is $50.

The controller is wireless - and best New-Gen controller out there, in my opinion, even without any sensor /moviment so far.

But the console itself needs a Wi-Fi addon to connect wirelessly to the internet. A small addon that is not cheap (I forget how much it costs) and plugs into one of the USB ports on the back.

Any thoughts I had about adding this new HDMI 120GB 360 to my equipment fell through when I read the new machine *still* does not equip built-in WiFi

It use to be the X-BOX 360 with the HD-DVD add on cost exactly the same as the Sony PS3 machine. Now if one wants to watch 1080P movies using HDMI it will cost $179 more compared to the Sony PS3 basic model and $79 more compared to the Sony deluxe PS3 model.
So the PS3 is now cheaper in price then the X-BOX system.

Doesn't matter. I'm still going to buy it. There are so many movies I want that are on HD-DVD that aren't on blu-ray.
