Cool Sony stops netflix from playing there movies on xboxlive

Check this out
Quote:
A week ago, I started watching “An Evening With Kevin Smith 2″ through the Netflix streaming service on my Xbox 360 but didn’t finish. Now, I can’t watch the rest.

Joystiq broke word this evening that Netflix stopped Xbox 360 users from streaming movies distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

This restriction only applies to Xbox 360 users. PC, Mac and other Netflix-enabled on-demand devices can still stream Sony Pictures Entertainment films, and is not a glitch.

“In the case of Xbox 360, a few hundred titles are temporarily unavailable to be streamed via the Xbox game console,” Netflix VP of corporate communications Steve Swasey told MTV Multiplayer in an e-mailed statement tonight. “Those titles are still available to be watched on subscribers’ computers and on TVs via other partner devices, and we hope they’ll be licensed for Xbox 360 shortly.”

When asked if the license just coincidentally expired as Microsoft was adding Netflix support or Sony Pictures Entertainment specifically requested Xbox 360 streaming to be disabled, Swasey wouldn’t say.

“As watching instantly becomes a more prominent part of the Netflix service, our goal is to have all of our streaming content licensed for all of our partner devices,” he said. “We’re doing well in this area, but it will take some time before we fully achieve that goal. Today, titles regularly come in and out of license and there is a natural ebb and flow to what we have on license at any given point in time.”

For now, however, Sony Pictures Entertainment films available for streaming through Netflix — including “Superbad,” “We Own The Night” and others — will remain blocked on Xbox 360, until Sony says otherwise.

All i have to say is......LOL.

Its about time sony fights back with something, they been standing there doing nothing letting MS take everything from them.

It gets better, here's from the original story:

Quote:
Update: We've found a common thread! All of the affected titles from our Queue are distributed by Columbia Pictures. Columbia Pictures, of course, is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, a subsidiary of Microsoft rival Sony. Case closed?

Oddly enough, Sony Picture Entertainment movies (listed here) are still Xbox-enabled.

Update 2: It appears that the sudden yoinking of Columbia Pictures films from NXE Instant Queue access is a licensing issue with Sony after all. MTV Multiplayer pinged us with word that, on the rental service's official blog, Netflix corp. communications VP Steve Swasey writes:
Only a portion of Sony's (overall, not just sony) movies are affected, which are the Columbia Pictures portion.

That is AWSOME! lol The Ps3 should get NetFlix! The download times and prices have made me stop buying from the Playstation store... I would just rather buy the BD when it goes on sale or from amazon for $20 then rent in HD for $7.

You know what the funny thing is? I'll bet that if the shoe were on the other foot and MS was withholding some shit to Sony, all the blogs would be praising MS for making such a smart move.

I hate the blogosphere so much. It singlehandedly ruined professional journalism.

That's just a clerical error, SPE movies will be removed in time as well.

This is not the last we have heard from the Netflix streaming though. Let's just say that Netflix were incredibly stupid to pick a fight with a company that owns a major studio.

If PSN doesn't get Netflix streaming sometime in the next year, expect Sony to retaliate. Their move could potentially put Netflix out of business or at least in serious trouble.

I remember telling people at Netflix that it was always better to side with the company that owned a massive movie studio, regardless how much the other side were willing to pay (lots of cash up front). If Netflix don't buy themselves out of the stupid exclusivity contract it could sink the company...

Wait, what? Will Sony Pictures really torpedo Netflix over their Xbox Live streaming deal? I know they can't be happy about it, but that seems like strongarm tactics (and in any case, does Sony even have a Netflix-capable infrastructure in the PS3 to put in place in short order?).

Of course, it's perfectly within their rights to do so, I suppose...

its pretty pathetic if you ask me, ive had superbad in my instaque for awhile now but i guess il have to take it out. if sony thinks blocking its movies on the 360 is going to help there service any, then they are pretty silly

so why when ms were blocking netflix on ps3, it's not silly ?

many people don't realise how many studios there are under sony belt.
other than the well known 'Columbia' and 'Tristar', there are many others also.

Interesting news. Kind of makes me glad I own a PS3, though I probably will never use Netflix on it.
