Default What is the defenitive BR disc for the first buy?

I got lucky and had a BD35 player thrown in for free on the purchase of a 46pz800u (1080p) set. I've never owned a BR player, but have had HD cable for 3 years. Is it even anything to get excited about? I've been watching 1080i feeds of Discovery and all the others for years on a 1080i CRT set.

Anyways, should I even bother buying a disc? Years and years ago I bought DVDs left and right. But I stopped because it became apparent I rarely watched them more than once. So you can cancel out suggesting the latest and greatest new release comedy or action flick.

How about Planet Earth? Is there a definitive BR disc I can buy to evaluate the picture quality on my new TV? Should I just buy AVIA or DVE on BR and call it a day? I can't imagine using it for anything other than renting discs (which I also haven't done since around 2005). I can't find myself buying DVDs, so I find it even harder to buy BRs which are even more expensive.

Wish the Nirvana Unplugged DVD was on BR HD. For some reason in my mid-twenties I just can't find the attention span to watch a scripted movie for 2 hours.

Blu-Rays look better than HD Cable, how much better? idk, but it looks better.

Iron Man is a great movie and blu ray to get. Planet Earth would be something nice to get as well.

What did you buy the TV for if you're not watching movies? For TV shows, for games? What things interest you? And yes, Planet Earth would be a good choice.

I bought my current HDTV, and the one on it's way mostly for sports programming, and premium network shows (Dexter). I enjoy the occasional movie and plan on getting a game console in the near future.

I apologize, I do realize this is a blu-ray forum. Not putting it down. What Pixar films can wow me but still be put to use considering we have no kids in the house?

Wife is an environmental engineer. She would probably love Planet Earth on blu-ray. Though, if it's already been shown on one of the HD networks, I bet she's already seen it and not sure if the quality is higher than a non-upconverting, pass-thru HD feed from the box.

I was just trying to get a feel for what you enjoy.

Ratatouille is amazing, Wall-E just came out and is just as great as well. I'm a 25 year old who enjoyed both these films; I think Pixar goes way beyond any other animation studio that's aimed at kids.

You should see an immediate difference in Blu-ray compared to an HD feed. Blu-ray doesn't get throttled in the bandwidth like cable, satellite and even OTA feeds do. I had (limited) HD from Dish a few years ago and when I saw my first Blu-ray in 2006, I was surprisingly shocked how great it looked.

For your 1st BD. Since it doesnt sound like you have a home theatre sound system, I'd go with something

Pixar:
Cars
Ratatouille
Wall*E

Disney:
Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy

There's been so many great releases. Can't really say there's a definitive BD. Though you can't go wrong w/:

Pirates Trilogy
Casino Royale (my first )
The Incredible Hulk
Transformers
Iron Man
Apocalypto
Any Pixar movie!
Man on Fire

There's many more too....

Best PQ/AQ to date!

You would also enjoy just about any of the Pixar films!

If you like concerts and Dave Matthews, get his disc as well!

You can't go wrong with either of these two:

1. Iron Man

2. Casino Royale -- Either the original release with the PCM track or the new 2-disc collector's edition with the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track. Either way you go, it's a win-win situation!

I believe my first was Speed Racer on a blind buy and I was totally engulfed. I can't even imagine what that film would look like on DVD on a SD set. Probably wouldn't even be worth it.

Really, there's tons to choose from. You can check out the reviews on this site; they give ratings on picture quality, and frankly, there are a lot of greats out there. But yeah, like others have said, Wall E, Iron Man, Transformers, etc., although I must add that I was also really impressed by Kung Fu Panda. Dexter's coming to BD some time next year too, so you might want to keep a look out on that.

I share the same feeling. Apocalypto is the one US disc that certainly stands above the rest (motion pictures).

Yep. See it's not so much that I don't like movies, it's about the signal to noise ratio (movies worth seeing compared with the slough of crap out there). For the handful of excellent movies per a few years, there are thousands that I can't help feeling my time would be better spent playing a game or sweeping our kitchen, or more currently: visiting web pages and forums like this.

this was my first movie... actually American Psycho and 3:10 to Yuma were, but Apocalypto was the first BD that blew me away.
