IMO HD-DVD is dead already, they just don't know it yet... kind of like The Sixth Sense.

The only thing left for HD-DVD is having Microsoft's support.

And MS isn't too much without the PCs that use it.
Anyways, I've heard word that MS might actually end up supporting Blu-Ray too, in Vista, permitting the hardware allows.

Ofcourse Vista will. If you supply a driver, every piece of hardware is supported.

The licence for Toshiba-NEC's DVD technology is quite high you know.
Millions and millions have gone to them... :x

I find it odd that Sony and Toshiba have rival hi-def dvd formats, yet are working together on the cell chip that will be the main processor for the PS3 that will use Blu-Ray.

well, thats the world upsidedown...

And by the way, the TRUE WINNER for the coming console war will be IBM anyway... They got in every console a license share for their PowerPC architecture

Corporate america, don't you love it. They don't hate each other, they will partner will any other company as long as both can profit from it. Besides CELL has nothing to do with Blu-ray. It's just that sony is using CELL technology in the PS3 which so happens to support Blu-ray.

As for IBM being the winner, I'm not so sure about that. IBM lost MAC, and is slowly loosing Enterprise Server marketshare to Intel. What IBM is getting from MS, Nintendo, and Sony is probably chump change compared to what apple and there own Enterprise server systems were geting them. Remember they do have to whip outchips dirt cheap, and in high volumes. Low yeilds also plague new processors such as CELL. So is reall IBM making much money form video games? They are somewhat, but not nearly enough to cover loosing enterprise server market.

Default Ign - Blu-ray outsells HD-DUD for 2nd straight month

Old news to us, but mentions some real figures:

http://gear.ign.com/articles/772/772518p1.html

250,000 bd discs were sold last month, as opposed to 125,000 hd-dud discs. That is not an insifnificant number... and I can't wait to see the numbers from this month for BD!

The latest Home Media Magazine is up.

They've changed their graphic from the normalized to 100 to pie charts that follow more conventional percentages, and have added a year-to-date.

The numbers they show:

Week ended Apr 8:

Blu-ray: 62.4%
HD DVD: 37.6%

Year to date:

Blu-ray: 69.4%
HD DVD: 30.6%

Since inception:

Blu-ray: 56.4%
HD DVD: 43.6%

That's a 70% market share this year!

Is it me, or is HD-DVD starting to look like a formidable oponent for Blu-Ray. Nothing much seems to be going on in the Blu-Ray camp, yet in the HD-DVD camp there are already concrete release dates. i.e. hardware in the USA by 4th qtr 2005, with almost 100 films promised between then and 1st qtr 2006. The first BR discs will not arrive til 2006 and then nobody knows when or what. Will people wait for Blu-Ray? especially as it's suggested that BR machines will be more expensive, and far larger than HD-DVD players, (to enable backwards compatibility with dvd).

Sky has announced that it's high-def service is only to be watched via HDCP enabled HDMI, it seems to me likely that we will be prevented from making our own recordings. At best they will be flagged 'watch once' or something. As this is the only selling point for Blu-Ray at the moment it might delay it's UK release til 2007. Then if BR discs are more expensive to manufacture that extra cost may be passed onto the consumer making Blu-ay discs more expensive to buy than HD-DVD. Or margins smaller for retail which would encourage them to stock HD-DVD. Anyway, just a bit of speculation of the top of my head.

Smile called the last one sitting this one out

I purchased my first DVD player from Panasonic in 1996 even before the enception of the sorry A!! DIVX machine. Because I was shown a DVD prototype in 1994. A major Improvement from Laserdisc which by the way had both superior sound and picture resolution. So how did I know DVD was it?
Simple. the whole world was nuts about its shiny silver cd's and the cool way they reflected on the wall. Now almost ten years to the day I shelled out 1200 for a floor demo DVD Rulez.

I cannot see with the same clarity when it comes to these 2 formats.Blu ray will win in storage and has the backing but the disc just isnt shiny and new anymore. As the guy who got it right last time I'm Standing PAT 4 now.

Yes I'm sorry... I created that list on the 3rd of october.. It wasn't clear if they would also release titles (or was it?). However, I've rewritten it now.
Sorry for the delay and possible misunderstandings.

Hitachi is in that list. Circuit City sells Hitachi and supported DIVX whereas Best Buy sells Mitsubishi and always supported DVD. I prefer Best Buy and I love my Mits HDTV. So I'll guess that Circuit City will support HD-DVD and hopefully Best Buy will be in the winner's (Blu-ray) corner... again!
