Default Is buying "open box" items from Newegg a bad idea?

Is it a bad idea to buy speakers from newegg that has "open box" on them?

Sorry, I dont have an answer. I was actually wondering the same thing. They have a really sweet deal on some open box speakers but I couldnt find anything that told you exactly what was in the box. Just something that says "some things may be missing"

i just bought an open box polk monitor 50 from newegg for 69.99 w/ free shipping, and it definitely looked brand new. the box was pretty beat up. i don't know if it was ups' treatement of the box , or maybe it arrived at a newegg facility like that. but i'm perfectly satisified w/ my purchase. i'd say for for it. i think there's a limited 15day return policy as well just in case...

also, i kinda wish i'd have waited for the open box monitor 60 on their for the same price i bought my 50 for...ah well...

I really can not say about buying open box speakers. But I have bought a floor model Panasonic 32" CRT TV, dealer demo Thorens 125 MK II turntable, dealer demo Accuphase Integrated Amp, dealer Demo Krell KAV 250a/3 Power Amp, dealer demo Proceed AVP Pre/Pro, and the store owners Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers. I have had very good luck with these and other items. The TV has never had an issue, nor has the Turntable. Eventually the speakers needed some work and so did the electronic equipment. But all of the electronic equipment ultimately required work either while still under warranty or well after the warranty had expired.

I've bought several open box items from newegg and haven't had any issues with the products. The only concern some may have is that you aren't necessarily going to get a manual included. I've always had the requisite software discs included though, so it's a moot issue.

Demo Thorens?

Demo Krell?

Does this store owner owe you money or something, man? They usually will that stuff to their kids!

Well the Thorens was a store demo from Tech Hi Fi when they were still in business in New Brunswick, NJ when I was a Grad Student at Rutgers in 1977. That was a big store and also as I recall also a demo center for the company. At the time the table only cost $225 without an arm. The Thorens still works but is finally being replaced.

As to the Krell KAV-250a/3. This was bought from CSA Audio in Upper Montclair, N.J in about 2000. I bought the store demo. Krell had just come out with the replacement. Years later they dropped the line. The Krell has been upgraded and is now used for my center channel and my surrounds. Ultimately it will be used for the center channel and the rears when I go to a 7.1 system.
