I have an old M&K sub but the drivers need to be replaced which are quite hard to find at the moment plus I would have to get them shipped overseas so maybe not so cheaper either.
since I have a spare Parasound power amp (125 watts/channel), i could use the sub outs on my processor to feed this power amp to a passive sub. I am thinking this might give me a more economical, higher quality sub if I could find a good passive subs. Does anybody have suggestions or used any passive subs with an external power amp? Thanks for any recommendations, would like to find something under $500 but will always consider something higher if worth it. |

SVS makes passive cylinder subs. I have not used them, but I do have one of their powered subs and it is wonderful. Check them out here:

Big Daddy builds passive subwoofers. Read my thread on Repairing, Upgrading, & Building Subwoofers You will see how easy it is to repair your subwoofer or build a new one.
Home Theater Direct also sells passive subwoofers, but I believe the external amplifier is included in the price. They come in three colors: Black, Dark Cherry, & Light Cherry. They have 5 year warranty with 30 day home trial. I don't know about international shipping. Level Three 12", $429. Level Two 10", $349. |

Thanks Bigdaddy, I am reading through your thread. Glad to have many options.
My Gallo Reference 3's have a second bass voice coil that extends the bass from 32hz to about 27hz I believe. It is made to be used with a special bass amp from Gallo but I currently feed to sub outs to my Parasound amp and connect to my speakers bass binding posts. The results are not bad but not quite like having a true sub woofer. My second thought was to replace the drivers in my M&K sub but I am having a hard time finding 2 8ohm, 8" M&K drivers. There seems to be plenty of 4ohm drivers but since this is s push/pull design, it needs 8 ohm drivers which then give the amp a 4 ohm load. But the M&K only goes down to 27hz as well, so I just now thought about find a passive solution to use with the Parasound amp. I'll check out the links you provided as well. |
