im curious about this too. i have my set up in my bedroom and my only light source comes from either the sun (when blinds are open) or when my tiny little ikea study lamp is on. the light is only powerful enough to shed light on my apple macbook. i tried putting that light behind my tv for effect but it looked lame. i was thinking of putting some kind of longer type lamp behind it. i think the reason why people put lamps behind their tvs is to offset the brightness. i know i personally have a problem with bright lights.. my eyes are sensitive (even in movie theatres)

For one, it looks really cool =) But if you own an LCD there is an actual 'scientific' use for them as they help lessen eye strain. Below is a thread where you can read a lot about it. I have a cinema quest backlight display and get compliments on it all the time.

It is called Video Bias Lighting (Backlighting).
You may not get good results with just any light behind your set. From what I have read a 6500k bulb that has a cri rating of 98 is best.

Such as this.

I think I may try Ideal-lume lights.

I've been meaning to get a light behind my TV for the longest time. When I watch TV in complete darkness I get a headache after a while, but if I have my closet light on and let a little bit of light in, I don't. I figure tossing a back light in my system will do the same thing as the closet light and stop the headaches.

Watching a movie in complete darkness can produce eye strain. Proper bias lighting behind your display can eliminate that problem and enhance your perception of the image.

Thanks for the replies. I kinda figured it was to prevent eye strain, its just that I don't like the look of it. I've never had eye strain from watching a movie in the dark, but maybe thats because I wear glasses when watching tv.

I have a Philips LCD TV set with Ambilight it is a back light that changes both intensity and colors depending on the image displayed. It's both very nice looking and eye relaxing.

I put one of those on my ceiling fan... required slight modification by removing the cover that goes over the bulbs.. and now its just direct light...

They are very bright.. I only have one light on my ceiling fan I figure if I buy 2 more I would have a very bright room...
