I haven't seen 'Curious Case Of Benjamin Button' yet, but this hasn't made me jump at the chance to go see it anytime soon.

Fail? Not really....

Sure Buttons was based on a 1921 short story of the same name written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Way before the 1986 novel of Forrest Gump.
Still thou, Gump was filmed first and the screenplay is by the same guy,Eric Roth. So you can't help but notice the same story beats and flow to the film.I think it had to do with Roth milking himself.

Of course each film has its own vibe because of the two different directors and the aging backwards catch.

I think Pitt, whom I always enjoy didn't really deserve an Oscar nomination because he was pretty low key the entire movie. He was a smarter more aware Forrest Gump who seemed to be sedated. Not saying his acting was bad because it served the movie well. I just didn't see it as award worthy.

I did and still do like Buttons and think it's one of the years best. BUT after seeing this comparison a few days ago it has made me think twice about what I watched. It really is an alternate reality version of Forrest Gump. Something about the film kept me from declaring out loud to friends, WOW go see this now cause its the years best. I think it was that nagging feeling that other than the aging backwards factor, I had seen this movie before.

That said I'm happy Fincher got a nomination cause he did craft a wonderful film with a good cast. I still hope Slumdog wins because that movie truly was original.

If you read anything under the PLOT section, the film doesn't resemble much of the short story at all. Basically, they used the the whole person aging backwards and some character names but it's really apples to oranges.

If you want a modern easier analogy:

What do Dawn of the Dead 1978 and Dawn of the Dead 2004 have in common?

Zombies and a mall.

Or:

What do the Benjamin Button film and short story have in common?

A guy aging in reverse.

I just wish this movie were a little better. I've said it 20 times before..... Why didn't Fincher get any props for Zodiac? Why did he have to make this film to get an Oscar Nod?

I'm still not understanding the "without the AIDS" comment at the end. Can someone explain?

Loved this movie

My only complaints were that it could have been a bit shorter and when Pitt is supposed to be early to mid fifty-ish he looks much younger than what he should. JMO

Great examples and from reading the wiki link the short story is very different. I would have rather seen Eric Roth test his skills with that instead of using the same story over again. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the short story wasn't Benjamin Button born as a full grown man too?

I use this example when Eric Roth was writing the script: A musician thinks he is writing a great song only to realize it sounds exactly a song he had written before.
Eric Roth did a great job with GUMP, and there was some good writing in Benjamin Button too, but everything in that funny or die video I noticed when watching Button.
and yes Fincher deserved a nom for Zodiac.

I know the Fitzgerald story was a short story. So yeah there was plenty of room for Eric Roth to play with, but he didn't. He just re-hashed Ideas. It's kind of like when a musician is writing a song and he thinks it sounds great, but later comes to realize it sounds exactly like something he wrote many years ago.

I enjoyed Benjamin Button. It was similar to Forest Gump but the stories were way different.. and their conditions are really different. I personally felt Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett had awesome onscreen chemistry and their love story was the strongest point of the whole movie. Gump's love story was good too, but not as strong, imo.

Gump was good with digitally inserting Tom in with JFK and Ben Button was great at makeup if you want to see a 20 year-old Brat Pitt.

Loved this movie. The CG Ben Button in the beginning looked very real.. reminded me of Gollum from LotR.

Forest Gump was an immensely better movie. Buttons was way too long, really had no point, not particularly funny, interesting, or romantic. I would give it 2.5 out of 4 stars.
