Default Has Hollywood Gone Comic Crazy?

Have the movies gone too far? As far as the comic craze?

Are you tired of it? Or not?

I'm not a fan of the genre.... but numbers don't lie...... they're banking off of these movies, so I don't think they'll go "Too Far" until they start losing money because people are sick of them (and I don't see that happening )

Looking at the big movie releases this year I'd say no. The biggest movies this year are remakes of 80's cartoons.

No. They are just running out of material and looking for a trend to make money. I personally love comics, so if done properly they are wonderful films.

I'm loving it. However, I don't think they've gone as far as "comic crazy". There really haven't been that many adaptations. Not merely sufficient enough to get tired of them either.

They're cheap to make. They have a built-in fan base.
The good ones are far from cheap.

Comic book movies are relatively safe financial bets for the studios because they come with a built-in fanbase that will watch the movie no matter how bad it is. On top of that there are merchandising and multimedia promotional considerations that can really generate huge profits.

+1. They are either making a comic movie or ruining a classic in a remake. Man, I would hate to be associated with Hollywood.

Default Where in the world is Old Action?

As a lover of action films. I'm getting tired of them. That's all I hear.

Watchmen (2008) this. Wolverine (2008) that. Avengers (2011) here. Thor (2010) there. Iron Man 2 (2010)? Batman 3 (2011)!!!!

Where has all the gunplay gone?

Has comic films replaced it?

I agree, I wish more action films like Shoot Em Up would come out.

That was such a great movie.

Or films like Commando

But I am very excited for Watchmen, most anticipated movie of the year so far.

9 is my most anticipated. The short was so good. It could be an epic.

Did you see Taken? (2009)?

There are tons of these gunplay movies each year. Some really good. Some not so much.

Its the hot thing right now, eventually it will run its course as do all the different genres in Hollywood whether its the slasher, epic, western, or period movies.

They are not running out of material -- they are simply risk-adverse and therefore will much more likely bet on either already-existing material (i.e. comic books, for example) or really streamlined high-concept ideas.

... Why don't you like dramas? I mean, in any movie of any genre, what good would it be without any conflict? Drama is more or less the basis of storytelling and the narrative.

Yes they are running out of material. I worked at WB. Most of the movies you see don't come out of thin air or are originally written. They are running out of material and must turn to either books or base movies off of comics, remakes, etc.

What I meant was there are tons upon tons of specs (i.e. original screenplays) out there waiting to be looked at not to mention even countless novels among other mediums that have yet to have their rights bought up by anyone (i.e. probably not anyone from the major six, needless to say).

The congloms may be running out of already-acquired or in-development material, but that doesn't mean they are ignoring or taking a blind eye to the increasing-wealth of narrative that is out there waiting to be discovered by the right people.

Well you are kinda right. Because you have to consider that every story has been told from some variation or another. Whether it be a love story, adventure story, etc. It's been told. The only original way for screenplay to grab someone's attention really is if like I said above they change the sequence of the story or use a new technology on it. These are original ideas which doesn't happen much.

Most and I go so far as to say that close to 99% of what you see in the theater is recycled to some extent or another. There are very few original ideas floating around.

look what scary movie spawned all the crazy movies that have come off that for studio's trying to make the quick buck.

you go with what works.

As long as they are fun to watch and NOT CARTOONS. I'm sick of all of the cartoons being made for grown-up people. They ruined good stories like Beowulf by making into a cartoon. The use of the camera is an important part of the movie.

I think it's funny how people think movies now are so much worse and trite than they used to be. In any generation there were so many more bad, cheap, generic movies than good ones. We just don't remember those ones. Look at all the stupid beach movies from the 50's and 60's.

I love it. I'm a big fan of these movies, if done correctly. I loved 300, Sin City, Road to Perdition, Spiderman 1 & 2, X-Men, etc. When they follow their source material and stay serious when the material calls for it (i.e. Batman, most graphic novels, etc.) and not so serious when it is appropriate (i.e. the proposed Deadpool movie - violent, but not overly serious) then I'm good. It's when they destroy the source material that I have an issue.

I can't wait to see Watchmen and Wolverine (Deadpool!!!). They are finally tapping a section of the market that was untapped for far too long. To me, it is no different than adapting a novel.

If you don't "roll the dice" and try something fresh and new from time to time you don't grow and eventually you become stagnant and stuck in a rut. Then you lose focus and things start to become routine and mundane. Eventually you stop caring about what you produce and everything turns to crap. Just look at all the Friday the 13 movies that came after the part 2. The same with Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Superman, The Pink Panther, etc. Eventually, Hollywood will have to try something new because they are going to run out of idea to copy and steal from.
