I think the sony xbr4 is a great tv, and looks very sexy. My cousin has the 52 inch one. His brother has the xbr6. I can't tell any difference in picture quality because they're not side by side lol. However, the xbr4 I think looks much better than the xbr6. I think you should keep the one u having now.

The 800U will blow the picture of the XBR4 away, without question. The only set with a better picture would be a Kuro. However, if you are happy with your current set, I'd keep it for a couple more years unless you have all sorts of extra $$ lying around.

I came off a Sony Wega 36" CRT and went to the Sony Bravia 52" LCD. The LCD picture looked awesome to me at first. Later after watching some blurays I noticed issues with the viewing angle, motion issues, black levels and ghosting in dark scenes and scenes in the snow. I think the newer models have better black levels but I am not sure about the other issues. The Narnia blurays are excellent discs with dark scenes and scenes in the snow to test your TV. I found the issues on these discs. I ended up getting the Pioneer Elite Kuro and everything looks fine on this set when I play those movies. I don't know what your budget is but BB has the 50" Kuro Elite now for $2800. Sony is a fine TV and I have been an owner of their TVs for over 10 years (XBR, Wega, then Bravia) but I had issues with the Bravia that I don't have with the Kuro.

The XBR4 is a great TV, but the -800U plasma from Panasonic will outperform the XBR4 in just about every test you throw it's way.
If you believe opinions, the XBR4 is better. If you believe actual benchmark testing, the -800U is the better set. If you want an XBR that's better than the -800U you'll need to pony up for the XBR8, providing the uneven lighting doesn't bother you. Given that the XBR8 is more than twice the cost of the -800U, the Viera is still the better choice for normal viewing environments. |
