Default Sony STR-DG720 vs. Onkyo TX-SR506

My dad recently purchased an HDTV and PS3, and is looking for a very entry level receiver so he can get HD audio. He's looking to spend no more than $350, so I pointed him to the Sony STR-DG720. He asked about the Onkyo TX-SR506. Does that Onkyo model accept HD audio? I looked at the description on Onkyo's website and it said it would accept 1080p video but nothing about audio.

If it does accept HD audio what are the pros and cons of each receiver versus the other?

The 720 will accept HD audio over HDMI so the PS3 will decode and send the decoded audio to the Sony.

The Onkyo can not do that, as far as I know.

The real winner would be the Yamaha 463 as it will accept HD audio via HDMI, just like the Sony but it is just a flat-out better receiver.

It doesn't.

The lowest model that can do audio over HDMI is the 604, and then only if the player decodes. You need to be looking at the 605/606 in Onkyo's line.

By the way, you can easily get a receiver for that price. Personally, I put Onkyo's receivers over Sony's.

I did recommend the Onkyo 606 but I couldn't find it for under $350. So the Yamaha 463 can be found for under $350?

Well, we're talking refurbs. I own one and would definitely recommend it from a certified dealer. accessories4less.com and I think 6ave.com are a couple dealers.

$249 shipped free from J&R through buy.com

jr.com also has the new rx-v465 for $329 that has 4 hdmi inputs and also decodes internally.

Or the Sony 820 it has 4 HDMI ports & decodes Lossless audio, it also does 1080p/24 & its a 7.1. It can be had for cheap ( under $350 ) Circuit City had one *new* for $332.00. Good luck finding anything there though! Look on amazon.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. He does have the PS3 so his receiver doesn't need to decode the lossless audio internally; so whatever the cheapest one (and best sounding one) is that accepts HD audio is the one I'm going to recommend.
