Default Halo 3 Reaches 1 Billion Games Played!

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2...er-matches.ars

"Despite having been launched nearly two years ago, Halo 3 has steadily remained one of the most played titles on Xbox Live. In fact, the number of matches played is pretty astounding, as Bungie recently announced that the 1 billionth game of Halo 3 was played online on Saturday night.

To put that number in perspective, the games wildly successful predecessor Halo 2 has yet to reach the same plateau despite being released back in 2004. That game has been played 798 million times. Not bad, certainly, but it's no 1 billion.

Bungie goes on to break that gigantic number down, to help give a better idea of just how many games have been played. Roughly estimated, 1 billion matches at 3 minutes and 19 second a match, works out to 63 centuries; 630 years; or 2,300,000 days. In reality, the game has been played for 2,023,153,340,764 seconds online. That's a lot of Halo.

It's most definitely an impressive feat, and the number will likely only continue to grow. Despite the heavy competition from the likes of Call of Duty 4, Halo 3 will probably remain one of the most played games on Xbox Live for quite some time."

Man this game is still kicking ass and taking names for online play.

Good for Halo and the 360. But I'm still not buying it.

Halo is OK for what it is...... but anyone who is REALLY a fan of first person "twitch" shooters really owes it to themselves to check out Shadowrun. It's fun, strategic and the mechanics of the game reward team players. Lone cowboys will be left in the dust. Plus it's the only game to date that allows console players to play head to head with PC players.

I think Modern Warfare 2 will destroy that number. Everyone I know with a console is getting ready for it.

Somehow I doubt that will be the case. Now, I'm not knocking Modern Warfare 2, nor am I praising the Halo series (because I personally think Halo is VERY over rated as well), but Halo does have a HUGE following, and it's going to take a series with at least as big of a following to potentially knock down it's record.

Just because you know a half-dozen to a dozen people who are buying MW2, it doesn't mean that it will translate into a billion games played.

But how huge is the fan base really? Yeah, the multiconsole thing works in it's favor, but it's not exactly a game that I hear about or see all over the place like I always have with Halo (even back when Halo only had one installment available).

Maybe time will prove me wrong on this (which if it does, I really don't care, because in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter.. both are games that I don't have much interest in), but I wouldn't go gambling my last dollar on MW2 reaching this record... at least not any faster than Halo did.

It sold over 10million copies, and that was last year sometime.
